Sorry to invade the series forum with a 110 question but I thought you guys would be better qualified to answer it as its got a 2.25 petrol engine. :D

It started running very erratically with major misfiring and loss of power after a few miles. I let it cool down for a few hours and it drove ok until it started to warm up when it did it again and I limped home coughing and splutering at about 20mph. Once home I took out the spark plugs and cleaned them up(they were all covered in a dry black soot) and took off the air filter. I then took it on a 15 mile round trip without the air filter on and it drove brilliantly.

I've tried cleaning the air filter but it still looks quite black. The removable mesh section was easy enough to clean but the mesh in the main body of the air filter doesn't look any cleaner. Is it possible to convert the existing oil bath filter to a more modern one or are there any aftermarket one that fit?

Any help would be appreciated.

treat yourself to a new filter cartridge, they are a service item

if anyone mentions KnN they'll be shot at dawn

The lower removable mesh element looked quite clean, its the mesh in the main body of the air cleaner that looks black. Is it possible to remove it to clean it or can you buy a new claner body?

could soak it in petrol and shake it about in there, leave it in for a few days then carfully wash with warm water, then back in petrol to flush again and then finally warm water on full and let dry in sun quckly

i have a new air filter on my landrover
the old oil bath one is stil there but ive heard it makes no odds unless your going to go in water. is this right? wich one is best out tof the 2 ?

thanks

i just ment like out of the 2 what are the pro's and con's of the oil bath and what are the pro's and con's of the new air filter thats on it at the moment?

i just got the landrover and it has a newish cone air filter on at the moment but the old oil bath filter is still there but not connected. duno y :/

I'm wandering if the problem is being caused by the air filter. When you ran it without the filter did you just take the air intake pipe off the top of the carb? If so then try running the engine with the pipe connected to the carb, but disconnected from the air filter. It could be that the flexible pipe has broken down internally and is restricting the engine.

thanks ill give it a try :)
it was quite scabby so i guess it could of stated to break up inside
thanks
