Clearly the aircon on the Tdi 300 Disco has a thermostat - I can hear it
clicking in and out when it's on the coldest setting. Trouble is, coldest
setting isn't cold enough, is there an over-ride somewhere I can adjust?

are you sure it a thermostat you can hear?? the compressor has a electro-clutch on it which makes a click when it is operated. if you don't have enough gas in the system the clutch wont operate. if its border line it may cause the clutch to cycle in and out. as with all A/C problems the first step is to check yer gas. either get a gauge to do this or take it to an A/C place. without th eproper gas charge in the sytem you'll be wasting your time doing anything else

If you override the thermostat the condensation on the evaporator will
freeze, blocking the airflow and stopping the aircon working at all.

I wonder if it's in need of a recharge? Ours was baltic when first recharged
and then slowly took longer to come in to play and was just cool towards the
end.

Yep, when I had mine fixed a couple of years back the guy stuck a temp
probe into the air vent and was not happy until it was in single
figures. If yours isn't cold enough then there is probably something
wrong.

I'd agree about recharging - had mine done in the Disco a couple of years
ago and it made a huge difference. You didn't notice the drop in
performance until it was restored to normal levels.

Is it a thermostat on the aircon pump? I though it was just done on
pressure? As far as I can tell from my unit here in Zimbabwe, the amount of
time it is actally driving doesn't vary much with temperature.

Thanks, it has just been re-charged which made a little difference.
I'll check the temp and report back.

Have you got it on recirculate? It helps lots when the outside temperature
is very hot.

Just out of curiosity, how much did the recharge cost?

Todays, £52 sumat, last one as £70 Both done on the drive at home, this chap
was on recommendation and more akin to Refigeration units with cars as a
side line.

Defo worth shopping around, could even be done at work if theres a power
socket near to the car.

Power socket? My guy says the cost of the can of refrigerant R134A is about
1.50 USD. He ran the engine then coupled the can to the aircon L point and
said it would suck in what it needed. Took about 10 mins and he said the can
was nearly empty. It was a US 12oz can and my Disco is supposed to take 6
English ounces.

He didn't charge me but I gave him a tenner and a couple of bottles of
decent English ale.

Haven't heard from him since, must pop round and check he's OK....

On my system both times as it was empty the chap vac'd the system to ensure
it held pressure. I'm also assured that this is the best process. The Vac
tool required plugging in. Though I'm sure could be run off an Inverter if
the need arose and the geezer had one.

Doing it the way you have, you can buy refill cans off ebay / at auto stores
if you just need to top up an already semi filled system.

No green puddles today anyway :)

We pressurise our stuff with nitrogen before we vac, before we fill with
HCFC, because its much easier to see leaks ! Our systems have held gas
for 20 years without leaks, but then our pumps are hermetically sealed
units, and don't have a rotating shaft coming through the walls

Then vaccing out is good because it dries out the system, and water
vapour is the enemy of efficient refrigeration, and once vacced off,
you can check for leaks.

Was looking on Ebay for the valve adapters yesterday, and they can be
had for less than a tenner, so I must do our car too.

And how much is a replacement compressor, when yours seizes because the oil
in the system wasn't replenished at the same time as the refrigerant?
I'd much rather pay a decent aircon specialist to charge the system
properly, than save a few pennies using snake oil and then have to replace
most of the system at a later date.

How do they measure the lube fill ?

Last time mine was done, the lube was fed into a measuring cylinder on the
machine, then drawn into the system.
