Hi Everyone,
I'm really in need of some help.
I have a 99 plate Disco 2, the back end has totally sunk and the air compressor is not working at all, i changed the fuseible link fuse as that had blown but the new one has blown as soon as i tuned on the ignition.
So do i need a new compressor or could it be something else and is it more cost efective to replace the lot with springs?
Thanks in advance

Thanks for the reply Neilly,
I dont have diagrams and have never really worked on cars at all and only have the most basic tools so i'm trying to learn as i go along.

Hi Sheppy,

Then I suggest you download the rave workshop manual and look at the wiring diagram, ( see link below )
Although TBH for something like this you may want to get a second pair of eyes / hands / brains that have a bit more knowledge to help you out. Plus a Digital multimeter, available for less than a tenner.

Maybe include in the title ( if it can be changed) that help may be required, for the LZ fee of cake....:D

Good luck.

Cheers

LOL,

Sounds good, unfortunately I am not available this weekend or I may be tempted, plus it is quite a drive.

If you go to the top where the thread title is, to the RH side is "thread tools", you can edit the title there. Maybe add a shout out for help and a general location. As you are not stuck in the wilds in danger then it is maybe not something for LZIR. ( you could always sens a PM to @The Mad Hat Man to ask if it would be acceptable for inclusion there.....:)).

Cheers

You can always change back. £68 for the spring conversion kit isn't a big gamble compared to £300 for a compressor if it has gone. What I like about springs is there is then nothing to worry about. My insurance company charged me £18 for registering the change.

Hello Sheppy,

Before the fuze 'blew' was the compressor continously working etc. It should 'set' the suspension and only come on when you make adjustments etc. If it was continously running then it may be worn out but a fuze wouldn't normally blow because of that!! It must be shorting out somewhere on that circuit. If the circuit has other components 'piggy backed' onto it it may not even be suspension related? You need to check the wiring diagrams related to your car and don't discount something that may have been added on by a previous owner(or yourself). I don't know Disco suspension at all but a blown fuze may have nothing to do with a suspension issue, per se. It requires a little investigation to eliminate the possible causes. Others on here may know better but changing you suspension because of one blown fuze doesn't make sense. I hate electricals, it can be daunting but if you can see if anything else might be causing the issue you may be able to save yourself a lot of work for nothing....My 'tuppence worth'. FWIW. BEST OF LUCK!

Thanks MollyNomad,
The compressor did run a couple of times after i turned off the ignition but i went on holiday for 2 weeks and when i came back the back end was down and now the compressor wont come on at all.

If your suspension is 'down' (into the weeds?) then your system has a leak, maybe not a big leak but big enough!! My experience is mainly with Mercedes (Great for the first 4 years/after that some oily rags, pertol and a lighter works best!!) and once the system loses a set amount of pressure the compressor starts to run continuously, which is not what it is designed to do. Again, in my experience the 'clients' didn't realise that because they had their ICE systems turned up too loud. Sometimes running after the car is shut off, or usually on initial start up(a clients wife Cayenne has this issue at the moment) the system just needs a 'top up' every so often. These systems main achillies heel are the rubber components and seals that deteriorate over time(decades in your car?) through lack of use, excessive heat etc just the usual stuff cars experience. The compressor running a lot or contionuosly indicates that issue as the sytem is no longer sealed. This isn't related to your fuze blowing though, unless Land Rover installed a 'fail safe' to prevent compressor 'burn out'. Not heard of that before but possible. The fact that two fuzes have blown, when the pump is cool(?) dissuades me from that. The compressor can be re built (there are kits on fleabay) and its not a too difficult job(loads of youtube experts have posted this kind of stuff)

I would get in amongst the wiring and check for any 'chafed' or 'eaten through'/burnt wires....It's usually the reason fuzes 'blow. Also check all connectors, fuze connectors, relays etc for melting/plastic 'cooked' or even just a snapped wire that is 'going to ground'....The smell of burnt plastic is a good indicator...especially if there have been 'added components' as mentioned before...

"I LOVE THE SMELL OF BURNT PLASTIC IN THE MORNING..........IT SMELLS LIKE..........BURNT PLASTIC'

Them thar rodents see your Disco as a gift from the Gods.....and it being 'out of reach' to mice because its 'tall' is a fallacy..them thar rodents can climb walls!!!

Found a mouse nest in a clients fairly new TDV8 here in Spain.....They had to be evicted......and my mates S Type Jaguar and Ford Tranny Van have become 'Mouse Central'....usually eating anything in their path......if they like their accomodation you will need to check for them every week or so in the summer.....usually signified by the underbonnet sound deadening being 'holed' and the material being found in the deeper reaches of the vehicle....The transit van mentioned about even had the plastic wrapper from a portion of 'Rodenticide' in the nest, probably used as a duvet by the mice during the colder nights.....
