Aidan and Rosedrops Series 2a Rebuild\resto

So I thought I would start a wee thread to keep it all together rather than a million and one posts.

Always wanted a Landy. Never fussy as long as it was not a rangy. So had a few quid saved up and saw a series 3 109" for sale. Decided to go have a look. The guy also had the S2 for sale. But anyways went to look at one and got both. Now I knew from the start they needed a bit of work. Ended up with BOTH.




Have them in a lovely wee shed and decided to start on the S2a as the chassis was already done and it had already been striped.

What little did I know of how much had been stripped. It has a 2.5td(19j) in it which had basically just been thrown at it. The engine mounts were totally out.

And there was no gearbox cross member. So order new cross member and removed engine and engine mount. To refit the engine mounts and cross member I held the whole lot on a crane reattached crossmember to gearbox and put the remaining mount in. I then connected the rear prop to give me placement. So engine all siting square I tacked the engine mount and crossmember. Then unbolted the engine and box and took them back out so I could properly weld every thing. (Not the best welding but it holds)



Then back in with everything.


Then back on with the bulkhead.


While we were doing this we also stripped the front wheels to try and get more studs in as it currently only had 1 in drivers side and 2 in passenger side. Looks like someone rattled in the wrong studs as the hub is threaded.



Bit of a problem as you can no longer get S2 hubs. So I am now on the hunt for some used hubs. (Hint hint) done the back wheels all perfect back up to 5 studs and 5 new nuts.

Next task is the brakes and fuel tank. Currently there is now pipes at all.

you can get small diameter "pull in" studs for the S2/2a hubs to replace the original threaded in ones, these are similar to the S3 studs but obviously smaller diameter

this requires removal of the hub and drilling the old thread out just a gnats whisker bigger (no idea of the size required)

this eliminates any worry of further thread strippage

It's a long way down the line. Needs a new chassis. In the long run its becoming a camper. Some big plans for it.

Today we have found an old man in the next village to our shed that has definitely got a hording issue. I think aidso has a new friend

So spent a few hours driving round today. Got some new 1/4 rubber fuel line and a few scraps of hose and connectors from an old guy close by. He is going to get us the second under seat tank and hubs as well plus the fuel unions for the tank end.

Got fuel tank mounted to chassis. But again another bodge job on the chassis from previous owner. The new outriggers are a bit ****ty compared to the originals plus did not have holes for the tank so had to clamp tank in place and drill some new ones.





Going to take tank to get shot blasted tomorrow as there is about 20 layers of wax oil on the bottom(thank you MOD). Found out this was originally petrol as the tank that was there was butchered for the return line. Also had a few dead and pretty big bugs in it.

So decided since we were there we might as well do the hand brake. As said before the mounting plate was missing. So had to make one up from two bits of 40x40 angle welded together then onto the chassis.





Tomorrow's plan is get brake lines in as my pipe and bender arrived today.

your not going to leave them m8 bolts that long are you if you grind that weld back it will weld better a 2nd time

No ill trim back the 6mm bolts when tank is getting finally finished.

8mm

I know they prob should be 8mm but 6mm is all I had and there isn't a lot of room on the outrigger.

needs must ,what engine are you using

2.5td from a defender. Not my choice just what was "in" it.

it will do ok ,you can allways fit a tdi later

That's the plan for my s3. Anyone any ideas where to get 7/16 convex hose fittings? Having problems finding them for flexible hose.

In one of your pics there is what appears to be an ice axe ! Are you using that to chip the slag off?

I can't find the pic you are talking about but I presume that you are talking about our zombie killing weapon.

It's a Stanley frubar. One of the best tools ever.
