Hi cracking forum you have here, first off my name is paul but ive been known as jonah since i was about 2years old, i live in Birmingham and used to own a 300tdi about 5 years ago, since then ive had a bmw and a rover75 v6 2.5.
I have now decided to purchase a discovery td5 and have around £7000 to play with and would really like some advice on what to look for etc also any advice on any trusted 4x4 dealers within the midlands
Thanks

heres soe advice, avoid any advice on cars from our resident mod Sirus, he's got more scrappers than a scrap yard.........

with the current 4x4 market and 7k to play with you could have a couple of disco's and still have change to fill 'em up a few times. good luck mate.

With a budget of £7000 and a bit of luck you should be able to buy a facelift Td5 - post 2002 - with a better engine and lots of improvements to aid reliability.

Also, re gearboxes, if you are interested in fuel consumption/mpg, go for a manual box.

The aerodynamics of these vehicles dictates a motorway cruising speed of 60-65mpg for reasonable mpg, otherwise fuel consumption starts to get heavy.

If you cruise on a motorway at 60mph, with an autobox, and come to a hill you will slow down a bit and into the "torque lockup zone" speed, just where you don't want to be. Noise will increase and mpg will go down.

Good luck in your search

Dave

Thanks for that it will have to be an automatic for me;)

Saw a nice td5 the other day in Stockport on a garage forecourt.Think it was w reg one owner not sure transmission. Service history .It had window price £4995.I know for a fact that the garage has been struggling with sales so Im sure he would be willing to negotiate. ;)

Bought my 2000 TD5 from Gotham car sales ( so truly a Batcar). With my usual sense of timing I did it just before the 4x4 price crash but at least it sneaks under the increased tax by twelve weeks. They seemed vey helpful, service, credit check and MOT included. Later they paid for me to have the engine injector wiring loom replaced locally to save having to take it back to them for a misfire. Very happy with the car which they had sold it to the previous owner, and had serviced for him.

It's near Nottingham

They seem to have a few pass through their site

I have no connection other than one time customer.

You might want to check on the new tax bands - pre 2002 are cheaper. Also AVOID SUNROOF if you can. They leak. All of them. It's not a bad idea, with the discos so cheap at present, to keep some of yor money in the bank for repairs. The TD5 is fairly reliable but repairs can be expensive. They seem to be a bit susceptible to cracked cyl heads on the earlier ones. Check out all the dash lights - make sure they come on when you switch on and go off when they should. I suspect that it's the electronics that will finish off most of them before old age sets in with a vengeance. Also do a search here on air suspension and see if you want air or coils (I like my coils, but if you want 7 seats you have to have air). Obviously have a look for rust. Good luck!

Hi,
Check oil level first if it's high there maybe a problem with common rail being cracked, diesel being dumped into sump.
Also early ones suffer with the plastic dowels allows head to move due to expanding and suffer from coolant loss.

Nige
