More out of Idle courisoity then anything else I decided to check my AFT today .....Checked on Rave ..."Cold Engine, Start her up, Move Gear shift from P to 1 & Back Again leave idling & Check fluid

Result = NICE DRY DIPSTICK!!!!!!!!!!!!:eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek:

Borrows the wife Roller Skate (Nissan Note) & off I goes & buys a litre of Dexi 3 ...

Puts "Abit" in.......Stil dry

Puts Another Bit in.......Still Dry

Puts Half a litre in ...... Still Dry!!!!!

Puts the whole Fooking Bottle in ........................STILL DRY!!!!:eek::eek:

Goes & buys ANOTHER Bottle & puts "Abit in" ..... STILL DRY....

Puts Half a litre in ..... Theres a Micro globule on the dip stick

Puts ANOTHER FOOKIN bottle in ..... Ahhhhhh!!!!! THERE IT IS!!!......

Finally I ended up putting 2 litres of ATF in the box .... & Took it fer a Whizzz.............. WTF!!!!... A Totally different car ...... Smooth as a Silk Cod piece.....Just goes to show you gotta keep on top of these things...

I hadn't checked it as before the P38 I was running a Merc .... & THEY DO NOT COME WITH GEARBOX DIPSTICKS!!!! (Supposedly "Sealed fer Life") Yeah RIGHT!!!!

Merc charge £26.75 + VAT fer a dipstick ..... Made mine from a piece of Curtain wire & a perminant Marker pen. (After I'd "Borrowed" the one from Merc to check the length & where the "Empty & Full" marks were)

Seriously guys ... that 2 litres MADE A HUGE DIFFERENCE to the "Feel" of the car,

Now, I want every one of you thats read this & thought .... "****!!! I aint checked mine recently" to send me a Pound!!! ..... By the end of April I'll be buying my BRAND NEW Supercharged with that money!!!!!!:):):):):)

well i used to check me atf when doing me other fluid checks.Your lucky to have the dipstick, means its a 3 minute check, can be done once a week easily. The newer p38s are a bit more fiddly

No mention in your post about having the selector in NEUTRAL when idling to check the level ???
:behindsofa:

Yer know ... I specifically checked that ... in rave /maintenence/under bonnet maintenence it says

" Move Gear lever from "P" to "1" & BACK AGAIN leave engine running remove dipstick clean with dry lint cloth replace dipstick & check Oil level /top up as necessary!!!!

it makes NO MENTION of leaving it in neutral for level checking!!!!!

Plase tell me I've taught THE GREAT Irishrover summott he didn't KNOW!!!!!

You know f yu read so e of the posts i've made lately I think I

in the same boat. Think 2 ltrs are on order. Unlike you I'm on a 00 plate so have no dipstick so will open the box for the second time this week and put more in! Will keep you posted! As for teaching Irish something? If that is true I would be afraid! For him to be wrong would mean the info he so happily gives us all could be in jeopardy!!!!! Arrrrrghhhhhh! Lol

Don't think you have Keith. Two methods of topping up, with dipstick move through gears and place in neutral. Without dipstick move through gears and place in park. I think. I withdraw that Keith it does not mention neutral as you quite rightly say. Cannot see it making a lot of difference though.

Strange one this.....The book says check in Park, yet the autobox dipstick has the following stamped on it...."Check when Cold-Idling in Neutral".
I have always gone by the instructions on the dipstick..not the book.
LR do not make the gearboxes, Borg Warner do and I would rather trust what they tell me over what LR say....after all, their products seem to be more relable.

I am only human and believe me I do make mistakes and get it wrong and aint afraid of having a portion of Humble Pie now and again !!!

Yes this was my impression also. Don't think it matters a lot either way, although as auto box's have been known to drop into gear on their own, it would make sense to have the box in park on the later version as you are under the vehicle to do the topping up. Pass a slice of pie?:):):)
