Hey guys,

first thread in the defender area.

I own a 2003 d2a td5 and found a good deal on a 110 year 96 (340.000km on the clock)... Since I want to keep this defender for a VERY long time, I'm afraid I'm getting a vehicle that won't stand the time... Does my concern make sense? How old is old for a Defender?

Thanks

Really depends on how well it has been looked after. A 96 could be better than a 2006 if the later one hasnt been maintained.
My Ninety is 1989 still going strong on original chassis! :)

IMO as long as the chassis and bulkhead is sound then the rest is basically a rolling replacement program.

1996 is young IMO, last of the 'good' defenders.

Regular preventitive maintenance and regular servicing will see them last a long time.

There are people driving 40 year old series vehicles as daily drivers with no issues

Seller sent some pics and said there's NO rust. What do you think?

I think he is a liar! ;) :D There is always some rust on a landrover! ;)

It looks ok, but you really need pics of the trouble spots, which are mainly the rear crossmember and chassis legs, where the rear upper crossmember joins the chassis, and on the bulkhead, usually in the footwells or door pillars rather than the top bit. Can you get him to take some pics of those areas?

Nice, comfy Range Rover seats!

Opel seats, No Range Rover seats ever came with hoop head rests, plus I recognise them as either Carlton / Cavalier / Frontera Opel / Vauxhall seats, interesting dash board heater controls too.

Someone put the wheel on the wrong side! Looks nice though. You will need to get underneath though. Ideally you want some proof of regular oil and filter changes, that's quite high mileage ( fine though if the servicing has been done regularly).

Thats the factory fit air con, before they went with the under dash a/c set up, quite rare.

Looks good for the age at least on top, what sort of environment has it lived in?But as Turboman says you have to get in close to check for corrosion in chassis and bulkhead. It all depends how much care they have had over the years. My 1990 90 looks a bit tat on top but underneath bulkhead and chassis are original and in good shape.

If the rebuild was a good one there should be a lot of life in the engine! :)

Pics are a bit more of the same, looks nice enough. For myself the wheels are a bit naff. and the tyres are too wide and not aggresive enough. But that is up to the individual owner.

Still no pics of the chassis and bulkhead trouble areas, though. It could look like that and be rotten as you like underneath!

Also, you havent said anything about price? Would you feel it is a good deal by local standards, or is it maybe top dollar. No idea what it might be worth in Brazil.

In the UK, that might sell for £4000-£7000, depending on condition.
