I have an 1999xedi and i have spent a lot of money until now e.x 240e on new radiador, 400e on vcu new , brand new watertube system (the metal tube which transfer the water round the engine i dont know the exact name of it :p ) 400e , a referbish water pump and diesel pump and some bearings. I love the car its a nice family car with big boot. As it concerns 4x4 its a great vehicle as it never let me down in any safari snow sand rivers or mud. Anw 4 days ago the cambelt snap and the engine was a mess. My mechanic suggested a full repair of the engine which it will cost 2100euros. I am really confuzed , if i repair the engine how long it will last 1 2 3 4 years is it worth it.? I love the car but now its asking too much as i bought the car for 3000e. I will appeeciate any advise and am sorry for the weird words

How long ago was the cambelt replaced? It is unusual that the cambelt would simply break, often it is the aux belt tensioner failing that throws the aux belt which wraps around the main pulley and that destroys the cambelt.

When changing the cambelt, you should also change the aux belt, fuel pump belt and the tensioners/idlers. This should be done every 80K kms.

It is almost always the cambelt going that leads to the end of an L Series's life. If it is rebuilt, it will probably outlast the rest of the car - just make sure the aux belt tensioner is OK - the rebuild should include all new belts/tensioners/idlers.

I changed the cambelt before 60k and you are right the actual problem was that the main pulley broke in order to take down the cambelt and the whole engine.
I was thinking of selling it for pennies and buy a td4 engine. But again if not i need to make sure that the engine will last for a long time after full repair

If the repair is carried out properly, the engine should outlast the car. However for that amount of money, a second hand engine could well be cheaper.

I do not expect there are to many Rover L Series engines in Cypriot breakers yards. It will be easier to get valves, pistons, gaskets, belts etc shipped over from the UK - actually it would probably be cheaper to fly over and pick them up - of if you're flying over - just get a replacement head from a breakers.

Don't forget that the Rover L series engine was fitted into the Rover 200, 400 models. These sold reasonably well in the mid 90s throughout Europe. I'd be surprised if there weren't some engines reasonably local TBH. But it wouldn't be that expensive to have the necessary parts shipped over from the UK. Parts are plentiful and reasonably cheap over here.

Hi guys first of all i appreciate your interest about my problem.
I done my research on finding a second hand engine. It will cost me 1400e with the cambelts and everything else including the labours. But there is a chance that the second hand engine to be faulty.(high risk). With aditional 600e i restore my one everything brandnew shipped from Greece. Now knowing that parts are cheap there i will make my researh. Any lead to start with?

Hi again i just found an engine from Hull GB . the dealer says that it has 73k that he test the engine before removing it from fl.
He wants 530 pounds shipment including to cyprus.

As long as it's the correct engine. That isn't to bad for a shipped price. 73K miles is nothing but you'd be wise to budget for a new set of belts and tensioners ;)

Who is it in Hull?
I live in Hull so I might be able to tell you if they are reputable.

I desided to fully repair my engine everything brand new from landrover. After a lot of searching i am going with the safest way and i think its worth it

Ok i will. Now step by step am thinking that i will have a brand new engine so what i am going to need is a "brand new car". I found the solution for restoration of bumbers which is c4 gtegniq briliand product but what i am confuse with is for my wheels . i am looking for new wheels with more offset but what i have been told from a local shop is that is not possible. Is there anyone who can explain me y? The man from the shop told me that if i put more length to wheel from the wheel then i am going to have big issues with my tyres. Y? Is there anyone who change the rims?

A while back when people were talking about changing wheels, "Modulars" were all the rage and seamed to appear on every other thread.

If you change the wheels, you obviously need ones that will fit the stud pattern, but they also need to be able to fit over the brakes. Wheels from early and late F1's are not necessarily interchangeable I believe because of this - I think the size of the drum changed.

When fitting wider tyres, you can only go so wide as they foul the suspension struts I believe - hence, as HTR says, you can fit spacers to move the wheel and tyre further away from the strut.

Similarly, when fitting taller tyres they can foul on the bodywork, to resolve this you can add a lift kit (above the struts) to enable more space.

So there are a number of issues. Which ever route you take - check that the dimensions fit, you don't over extend anything, its safe and any parts are quality made - you don't want the corners falling off your car! There loads of threads on here discussing maximum sizes etc.

There's other implications as well, such as the speedo not reading correctly with non-standard size tyres, gearing (without a low range), legal implications (eg wheels poking past bodywork) etc. Not saying any of these should stop you - just bare things in mind and check things out.
