Hi all I'm after some advise, I bought a td4 hse a year ago and love it,its done over 150k mikes over the year I have upgraded crankcase breather, EGR bypass,de-cat and stainless through to back box,new VCU and £400 on matching tyres and now the clutch is going ( release bearing) gutted, I've had quotes of over 1k to get this fixed properly. I was just wondering what my options are,do I give up, do I pay the 1k and risk gearbox or something else going,do I risk using cheaper parts. Could I even get a gear box and cluch from a model that's done half the miles also would I be able to put an automatic box in? Sorry for the long post

Who quoted that price?

When I first got mine I needed a new slave cylinder and clutch (and a couple other jobs) and it came to about £400 from my local Indy.

It'll cost less to repair than to mess about with other boxes (most of the cost is labour anyway).

This was quoted from terrain vehicles in Bexhill, my local garage quoted £440 labour to fit slave and clutch kit that I got from euro parts

That's more like it, I didn't change my flywheel as I was out of funds. It would make sense to do all at the same time but if there's still life in it, it should be ok for a while longer.

Flywheel should be ok at that mileage I know of a R75 which as done 350,000 miles and as never had the flywheel changed, average price here in the midlands for clutch, slave, and master with fitting is £450 with a warranty of 18,000 or two years whichever comes first, shop around at £1000 you being taken for a ride in my opinion

Keep it and fix the clutch. It's going to be cheaper to fix than replace! You could fit an auto but it's quite a job to do.

And you would be foolish not to replace the clutch on the replacement gearbox so it's gonna be quite expensive as well. Personally I'd just get the clutch done and keep what you have.

Check what they're including in the quote, 1600 sounds like they're doing the clutch, flywheel and release bearing at the same time.

DO NOT use an aftermarket release bearing, especially if you're going to self supply it, it'll bite you later on.

I agree, those quotes are silly money. Put a post up asking for advice on garages near to you.

After the money and effort you've put into it, a consumable like the clutch shouldn't be a reason to scrap the car if its in decent condition.

As for changing to an auto box - I don't think that's a realistic option - there would be too many electrical implications.
