Hi,

Brand new to the site and in need of a bit of advice. I've owned Audi's into double figures and despite loving the make and never ever having a problem which caused more than £100 to fix I have decided to take the plunge and sell my wolf in sheeps clothing S6 and large it up in a bit more style with a Rangey.

The trouble is everyone I speak to about the late run RR's seems to complain about suspension leaks and coolant issues, never mind the MPG of the diesel. This has put me off slightly although I'm still keen.

Can anyone who owns and has bought the 4.6 or the diesel recently be kind enough to give me any advice re purchasing one and would I be dropping my love of reliability buy buying my desired fantasy ( ie a 4.6 Vogue or 2.5 diesel)?

Cheers for looking and I look forward to becoming a regular on here if you all pursuade me that they are a good buy for around 10K.

Many thanks,

Tony

I didn't have your budget, I paid £4850 for a November 2000 DHSE Auto. Apart from one problem with the EAS, new airbags and a sensor, service items rather than failures, and a replacement condensor it has been trouble free for over 6K miles to date. (Pushing my luck here)

I think for a 2.4 tonne tank it is very economical, 25 to 27mpg locally and up to 31mpg on the autoroute. I'm gradually refining the figures with time.:D:D:D Of course French roads are relatively traffic free which helps:D:D:D

Thanks for the advice Datatek, that's what I was thinking about. Have looked at the costs and it seems quite cheap to fix compared to the self leveling suspension on the S6 and RS6's that people moan about on on RS246.com, thankfully mine's immaculate so it hasn't happened in the last 20k of ownership!

Thanks for the offer re the 52 plate Big Al, but sick of this massive tax thing that the DVLA seem to think is justified so want a pre 02 plater really. Don't see why I should be coughing up £270 for my S6 when it only does 6k a year, same goes for the RR really. I'm not tight, it just seems totally unjustified to most petrol head motorists.

I'll start having a look around I think.

Cheers anyway, most useful.

Tony

anything up to an x reg will give lower road tax on p38. There are good ones available but not many must have FULL service history and not many owners .take your time and find a good one , you will love it .

I only paid £4000 for my 99 4.6 Balmoral edition (never seen one before but it has Balmoral on the back with an english badge and gold trim sounds tacky but looks really nice.) 94K when i bought it an its now due its 96K service (£600) never had any problems apart from new O rings on the heater matrix.

Fuel can be a problem going up this one hill i got 6.5MPG :hysterically_laughi but generaly its between 13-20MPG

an 10K will get you a lovely example with some change if anything did go wrong.

I have a 99 4.6 Vogue Special Edition which I've owned for over 5 years now. It was a one owner car, looked for it for a few months before I found the right one. It cost very little to maintain in the first 2 years beyond normal maintenance, then some more expensive stuff - EAS stuff, (changed all airbags), heater O rings, air con blend motors. Had heads off at 100 000 miles after a routine service showed a leak at the rearside of one of them, changed all pipes. Oh and two aircon condensors over the past 4 years....

I never LPG converted it and the engine has stayed sweet - there are those who say the gas conversion pushes the engine tolerances of the 4.6 (which already runs a bit hot) that bit too far. Others think its wonderful. Personally, I was never expecting to run a 4.6 V8 on the sniff of an oilrag like a Nissan Micra, so I put higest octane petrol in it and consistently get around 20MPG.

I love the car with foibles and all, recommend it +++

Mind you, it doesn't come up to standards set by my S8........:)

i'd buy one for around 6k then save the other 4k for anything that may or may present itself, or even buy one a little cheaper in excellent condition body wise, but with knackered engine. get a new engine and lpg converted and your laughing!!!

the 52 plates not mine wish it was, i stand to be corrected here but if i remember correctly the higher road tax does not come in untill Jan 2006 so any Range Roverfrom 2000-2006 will only be £215 tax and pre 2000 is £190

but dont they drive on the wrong side of the road over there though ......

No No NO, it's you lot that drive on the wrong side, the rest of us in Europe drive on the right side:p:p:p

OK my steering wheel is on the wrong side, but it's not a problem on empty roads and when you are sat up so high, I can see over the top of most cars:D:D:D

At one time in the world everyone was on the left like the UK:D:D

I would do what Gav states and that is get a decent one for a few grand less it is quite easily done with a bit of hunting and keep the money left over for any servicing and repairs which may crop up.

Hope you get a decent one and I am sure you will be happy with it, they are a great cars and the majority of people here even if they get some grief with them they love them.

Thanks all, will now be looking and might do the 6K thing and get it totally overhauled as do fancy all round DVD's as it'll keep my wife and boy entertained on the long drives up North to see my parents. I've been to my favourite private garage who looks after my S6 and he's recommended getting a knackered diesel as he's got a brand new 40L diesel BMW engine (which he swears he can make fit and work) which he'll fit for my at 2 grand and do the total over haul of the motor and air bag stuff for a one-ner if he can buy the S6 off me for 7k! I was thinking of keeping it or asking about 6k for a quick sale so might be a right bargain. Fingers crossed.
