Have any of you guys got any advice that will help me not to make a complete hash of changing my steering pump?

ie do I need to remove the viscous fan first (and so need to get a tool for that)

any other 'gotchas' waiting for me?

I've done a search around and there's all sorts of ways to approach it including one guide saying you had to remove the alternator first!!!

Thanks in advance

Well, nearly succeeded!!

Got the fan off and out, but couldn't get they fan cowl (?) out of the way as the radiator top hose is blocking it in - some much for "under the clips and lift out" Haynes instructions :(

Then moved to the pump, but socket slipped on last bolt and slightly rounded the corners. Changed to a different socket - one with six flats instead of ~10 points - which fitted the bolt better.
Managed to get some torque on this, then it took off the rest of the flat bits :(

I can still get a grip on the bolt with an old 'metrinch' spanner which presses on the flat instead of the corners - but as it's only a 10mm bolt it's a short spanner and I just can't get enough push on it to undo the bolt.

So, two questions;

how on earth do I get this bolt out in the tiny space available?

the pump fits to a mounting bracket that then fits to the engine - would it be possible to get the pump out by leaving the bracket attacked to the engine and removing the pump from it??? This would get around the bolt problem, but not sure I could get the pump out this way.

I shall be trying again tomorrow after work.......fingers crossed !!!

Well, managed to get the old pump off without removing the bracket.

A bit a jiggling and it just fitted through the gap - yippee!!!!!

Can't get the new one in the same way though. The new one has a pointless extra bit that just stops it sliding in - literally only about 1mm too big.

Now I'm stumped as I still can't get the bolt out to remove the bracket and do it properly :(
