Advice on replacing front prop shaft

It’s a long story but I have replaced my front prop shaft, wrecked some of the nuts and bolt heads in the process and am about to fit 8 new – TF box and Diff end – with the new prop shaft.

The only issue is that on the Transfer Box side, one has to remove the output shaft nut and washer (huge great thing) in order to get the old bolts out and put new ones in.

My questions is that when I loosen and tighten that output shaft nut, is it safe to do so purely against the gearbox with its diff locked, i.e. to provide the reverse force to loosen and tighten the nut?

I know there is a special tool that can be used to tighten this up and keep the transfer gearbox out still in order to tighten to 160 Nm but I don’t have this.

[FONT=&quot]Any advice on how best to tighten this back on given my limitations.

I did mine with the diff locked, the drum locked on and have not had a problem some 1500 miles later - while your doing it, you may want to replace the oil seals????

Not sure if your ment to do it this way, but i guess the engine in Low1 will put out a LOT more than 160Nm of umph

Getting it un-done however was another matter altogether - A significant force using a VERY long bar was required - As i recall it is a 32mm nut - halfords sell them. Once the nut is off it should just pull off the splines.

Many thanks.

Sorry just want to be sure. The stillsons would grip around the outside circumference of the drive flange with some force.

And this definitely will not damage the flange?

Just wanting to be certain I have understood properly!

The teeth of the stillsons might mark the outside of the flange, but that's not a problem.
