Hi folks I currently have a 3 series BMW torer 325 and I am a bit concerned re winter use. Ok be gentle.

Anyway I have been looking at Freelander and Discovery as a second car but I have a budget of about £3500.

I have seen a Y plate td5 es which looks in really good condition but advertised at £4250 I am just looking for advice as to whether this is a good price or not. It has about 115000 miles and a private sale so no warranty.

Never owned a Landy before so what to ask and look for.

I'll apologise in advance if I have posted in he wrong forum.

Hmm... seems a little on the pricey side!
I got my Y reg 2001 XS for almost £3k, OK it had 151k on the clock with a blemish on the front wing & a scar on the back corner, same side (still has those! :D) with 3 month warranty from the garage I bought it. But a Disco is so much MORE car for the money than a Freelander ;)

WELCOME!

Not too handy with the spanners but know a good Indy who has looked after a few of my previous cars once out of warranty.

I'm going to call the guy later.

What should have been done and are there any major costs looming service wise?

Thanks for the welcome by the way and I think Freelander is not the way to go.

There should be no warning lights on the dash after startup - especially the three amigos (TC ABS HDC), the ACE system (do a search - there's loads of threads about these) and the SLS (airbag suspension on the rear). Sometimes the airbags have been converted to coil springs (mine has) although if the ES is a 7 seater then there may be issues with some insurance companies - some stuff about 7 seats only type approved with SLS (mine's a 5 seater anyway). The ACE system may have been replaced with normal anti roll bars and the pump removed & an idler pulley installed.

Either way - no warnings on the dash ;)

It shouldn't leak - just because it's a Landy does not mean it has to pee oil to mark it's territory (mine's only recently begun to develop a couple of small leaks - rear axle and transfer box I think).

Service costs?

Usual stuff: Check for worn bushes & ball joints...everywhere really - panhard rod, track rod, drag link, steering ball joints on the front axle. Watts linkage on the rear axle.

Check the propshaft U/Js for wear and the rear donut (rotoflex coupling) for splits & crack
Wheel bearings - D2 have the entire hub including the ABS sensor wire as the replaceable item, not just a simple bearing. If there's play in the wheel bearing then it needs a new one, budget around £80 upwards per wheel for a replacement. A wobbly wheel can throw up the ABS warning light (sensor air gap) and thence the 3 amigos - need a fault code reader to tell you which wheel (if it isn't obvious).

Well I took the plunge and bought the discovery td5. Test drive went well but Sod's law on way home. sRS light came on. Just been reading the threads and will check connections under seats to see if that has caused it fingers crossed.

I'll get photos posted as soon as I get a few taken. Needs a couple of tyres any suggestions 255 on 18 rims.

Sorry now for the intro I'm Tom and live in SW Scotland so looking for any LR Indy recommendations. Also looking to get chassis rustproofed so again any suggestions appreciated.
