AC RFEFILL

Guess so far I have put up with it gradually leaking away and not even sure if it isn't "normal". Never knew you could get the sealer separately. Can a normal guy off the street pick this stuff up without being in the trade? And do you need the special kit to inject it?
I was looking on flea bay earlier after frostythor mentioned the diy kits & you can get a twin pack, sealer & recharge all administered through the trigger/gauge £29 (that doesn't inc. the trigger/gauge)

Think we were both looking at the same thing.
When you see the other prices this seems a bit too good to be true, but who knows?
It keeps mentioning the gas R134a, don't even know what gas my Disco td5 runs! OK, just checked and it is this stuff. that is good news.

will bear all this in mind as at the mo i have more pressing stuff to do, like getting the gearbox off to fix a leak.:(:(:(

Over here in British Columbia we cannot buy small cans of R134a as only licensed refrigeration technicians can use it. I have bought it on eBay from the US. I can get 3 cans for $26US for example. £60 is mighty expensive for a single can.
As for adding sealer, if it includes a full can of R134a you might need to bleed some gas out of your system otherwise you might overcharge it or not even be able to add any. I have read that the compressors always leak a bit at the drive shaft. As they wear this leak get worse. Of course you could have leaks in many other places. I bought some adaptors on Amazon a year or two ago that allowed me to connect my gauge set to the fittings on my P38.

The kit you buy to inject the gas from Halfords includes a gauge, it includes a trigger, a sort of pistol thing so you can regulate how much you inject, according to the gauge.
I've been using it for a long time on two Discos, a 1 and a 2 with no harm done. The £60 (£50 if you return an empty bottle) quite probably contains more than the cans you can get off ebay. One bottle usually does me at least two top ups. but then no two systems are the same especially as the vehicles in question are at least 21 yrs old!
 
the kit I bought did not have a trigger, what it had was a turn valve on the can cap end, fully whined it out, screw on the can, attach it to the AC system, now turn the valve clock wise to puncher the can, and allow the gas out and into the system, when you get to the desired PSI, then continue to turn clock wise and valve shuts the can,

the can are only 6 oz or 168 gram, so I got 3,

Hi Stan, I ordered the same 3 cans & filler hose/gauge assy. that frostythor used (my D2's air con system is empty after it's pressure check I have my FL1/ SWMBO & my Daughters cars to top up) I've never done anything like this before but in for a penny in for a pound:eek::).
 
The trick is to follow the instructions to the letter and make sure there is nothing getting in the way of the AC valve you inject the stuff into.
I have found it always works, just on some trucks it don't last as long as you'd like.
 
HI All well I checked it again yesterday, one of the posts said to immerses the can in hot water so the can had a bit of fluid left in it so, a container of boiling water, then reconnected it and toped off the system, my AC is now cold in fact very cold so Im well pleased with the result and as AC system do lose they say up to 10% a year I still have 2 sealed cans to play with

after removing the cone I removed the hose , and only a very small amount of gas came out so the boiling water trick recommended worked well, so thanks who ever said it

and my D2 is a1999, and I have never done the AC before

Glad it's sorted I can't wait to give mine a go. It was Gord Wedman with the hot water suggestion so I second that well done.

I read somewhere that it is a good idea to put the aircon on every so often even in the winter, as this circulates not only the coolant but also the oil contained in it which keeps the seals from drying out and causing leaks. Also it helps the solenoid to work too.
I try to remember to do this but confess I don't remember often enough!:(:(:(

I started out with temps of 11.1C @28psi on the low side. Now the temps are down to 7.5C after a couple of squirts from the can raised the pressure to 30psi.
 
I measured the air coming out of my dash vents the other day and it was 5C. You could see the effect of the compressor cycling on and off as the temp would go up by 3C and then back down. Now I think my compressor is making noise and might be on the way out
