ABS/non ABS axle questions

I'm in the process of rebuilding a 1990 ex Mod 110 which has a salisbury rear axle on it. I was intending to put a non ABS rear axle on it with disc brakes from a 110 with p38 internals and was lucky enough to get hold of one on ebay. I picked it up in the dark from the blokes house (200 miles away) without checking it out thoroughly and needless to say....... its an ABS axle. At least I'm 99.9% certain it is in so much that it appears to have a bunch of cables attached to it that I am assuming are the ABS sensors. I can't claim to be an expert on the subject as this is the first new axle I've ever has a close look at and I've not read up on it yet or had a look at a parts manual to confirm my suspicions.... and I was of the view a non ABS axle will have brake pipes only. Needless to say its 200 miles away and I cant' face haggling/arguing with the bloke I bought it from who is obviously clueless, and it was cheap as chips anyway and its in excellent nick.

So before researching it, i thought I'd throw the questions open to the forums

if it is an ABS axle can i use it without connecting the ABS sensors? (I'm assuming not)

can I convert an ABS axle to non ABS? I assume its just the calipers that will need swopping

any other opinions/thoughts views on the subject would be much appreciated

abs is only trigger wheels and sensors, more important is the ratio is right, it should be, but turn diff pinion and work out ratio is correct.

If it looks okay otherwise-slap it in

Doesn't make any difference, just make sure the sensor holes are blanked over or just leave the sensors in. Callipers will attach same, the abs is controlled by the abs unit which takes readings from the sensors, they connect up the same beyond that.

Is it a p38! Internal or just a later rover diff from the later 110?

bloke reckoned it is off a 2004 truck. I've not cleaned any of the crap off to see if there is a plate on it with a date but it looks like its not done a lot of miles so I'm inclined to believe him.

Any clues what this pipe is from/does?

Hi. The pipe is the axle breather pipe, stops water getting sucked in through the seals when wading.
Also def a abs axle, just cut the cable close to the sensor and leave the sensors in the axle. Won't do any harm.

where would the breather pipe attach? somewhere on the chassis?

It goes along the a-frame arm and clips to the chassis under the rear tub.
If you planning on doing any deep wading, it might be worth extending the tube to the engine bay to where the other 3 breathers are.

doubtful but you never know! I will extend the tube!

any other things I need to watch out for when I swop the axles?

Im sure these are renowned for their lesser robustness over the sals.

My 55 td5 with 75 k had more slop than my 97 with a Salisbury.

If its cheap it's cheap, and easier to fix, just have a thought before selling your salli
