hi! Just trying to take a desition in regards a new Defender. Does the ETC/ABS makes a real difference? What happens the etc if the difflock is being used.
I'm ordering a basic Def. 90. Just Alloys, Air cond & tinted glass (live in the equator) and metal paint. I'm not intending to travel 100% of time niether in highway nor in slippery roads. My principal need is to use it in normal 2 or 3 category roads and paths, and eventually "muddy week ends".
Diesel in my country is very dirty and bad quality, can i find special filters?
thanks 4 the info

ABS makes a real difference when some bimbo pulls in infront of you and slams her brakes on, in that you will probably stop and not hit her, that was in a Disco with ABS, if I had been in my 90, she would have no car.

ETC, I am not fussed about that, I prefer just to use the transfer box.

Also I look at is this way, my 90 is 16 years old, what will the ETC/ABS computer be doing in 16 years? Problem is, we have not yet had a generation of super computer land rovers at this age, give it 8 years or so and I reckon we will have people realising there hammer no longer works to fix problems in the land rover. Depends how long your going to keep it.

Dirty Diesel, hmm, when you say its bad quality, whats wrong with it? Does it have water in it, or just bits of grit etc...?

I would recommend, when filling your tank at the pump, you do so through a funnel with a good mesh filter in it to catch any large/medium dirt, or if you can be bothered buy the diesel, but put it into jerry cans, or some drums, and then deal with it once you get it home, i.e. run it through some filters.

The problem is the lift pump is before the filter, IF dirt gets into the lift pump it can damage it fairly seriously pretty quickly.

I would also just change the filter regularly, you could do a few thousand miles (maybe not I am not sure HOW dirty this fuel is) and then open the filter up and inspect the stuff in it, then you can guage how regularly you will need to change it.

I personaly would buy diesel in bulk, and then filter it when I got it home, also those jerry cans with mesh in the spouts are good.

Maybe you would be better getting used cooking oil and making bio diesel?

bb, my old LR transformed in land and an old farm house 2b rebuild as a hotel not so far away from bucay.
hope u come again, hope i finnish my hotel, hope i get my new defndr and share it 3 km above the sea level, where guy driving a Ford V8 truck once stopped me asking what engine was inside of my "very missed" tomb raider.

thanks disco!
Trully, paying the differenced that LR dealer quoted for the ETC/Abs probably lets me & famly spend a holidays in Europe. I think i'm not gonna order it, and perform "save drive" and diff locking when necesary.
Think dfndr is gonna work hard, so i'd rather spend on a system (CAV) used locally with a set-up for our Diesel conditions (those filters are much cheeper than the lr originals). Friend on mine runs daily (with more than 180k miles on clock) with his td5 and no problem.
