Hi guys,

i got a Disco 1 98 XS and today the ABS light came on. I tried to get the error codes but just can't get it to work.

1) I have the diagnostic connector and bridged pin 5 and 15 (some websites say 4 and 15, it seems that pin 4 and 5 are the same anyway).

2) Some website say you need to take the ABS light relay out, some say you don't.

3) So when I leave the relay in, bridge the connector and turn the key to position II, the ABS light stays on. The procedure description I found on the web suggest that the light goes out after 5 sec and then starts displaying the fault codes. In my case nothing happens, the warning light stays on.

4) When i get rid of the ABS warning light relay (apparently the green relay amongst the array of relays on the passenger side), the warning lights stays off. When I turn again the ignition to position II, apparently the warning light should light up, go off after 5 sec and then show the fault codes. In my case the light stays off and does not come on anymore. (Anyway, i not sure if i understand how the warning light can do anything if the relay is out. There must then be another circuit that triggers the warning light and does not require the relay)

So basically, i can't get the error codes displayed with the blink test and i have no idea what i am doing wrong.

Would appreciate any ideas and help.

Thanks!

Dietmar

The relay must be out that's sure, i did this myself not long ago and worked, are you sure you bridged the correct pins in the socket?, 4 -15 but make sure you are couting the right wat cos the socket can be upside down so pin 1 to be RH side bottom not LH side top, if everything is according to the attached procedure and still no joy then the ECU is suspect, scroll down in the document to the pin disposals

hi Sf,
I am quite positiv that i picked the right pins,
Pin 1 was on the bottom right side.
Will have to go to a lr worksjop to find out whst is wrong i guess.
If it is the ECU, how easily can it be swapped for another one? Not mechanically but electronicslly. they seem to be cheap on ebay.
Tnx

I've seen the post you erased cos it appears in my mail, if you understand the diagram you can see that the warning lamp relay's output is joined with the ECU output at S2056, if the warning lamp relay is removed the lamp is managed only by the ECU, the relay is there to extinguish the lamp by closing that feed from F5 through the closed load relay and in this case the lamp has feed both sides so it stays out, without the relay the ECU should give earth inputs there to make the lamp flash according to the diagnostic protocol so if your lamp stays out with relay removed it means that the ECU doesnt do it's job or the link between the ECU and S2056 is interrupted so you have to rule that out before going further
