hi all.

i seem to have developed a very annoying squeak (well 2 actually)

1) doesnt happen always but it is always between 10 and 30 mph. when i give it some gas it goes away. sounds like it is coming from the front wheels middle of the car ish. i was thinking it might be the brakes but i read that it might be the prop shaft needing greasing. any thoughts? is there a specific grease i should be using? if im greasing what else should i do at the same time?

2) 2 tone squeaking/squealing when braking. im thinking pads are worn out. but what would explain the 2 tone sound. i start to brake and get one tone/sound and when i am coming to a halt the 2nd tone/sound/squeak happens.

im going to be taking the wheels off tomorrow morning (weather permitting) so any ideas/thoughts would be appropriated. ill let you know how i get on.

cheers

A. Think you should take a look at spicers on prop shaft. Grease nipples on front and rear props only nowhere else. If your spicer is squeaking it's most likely knackered anyway. Greasing it will only delay the inevitable.

B. Think you should take a look at your brakes ASAP.

To be honest if you suspect these problems take a look yourself, it is not a lot of good asking those sort of questions on here. We cannot hear your squeaks so cannot diagnose them. But i would say you are on the right track on both accounts.

What about the wheel bearing?

Duff wheel bearings are usually more of a crunchy noise on full lock. What you've described is probably;
new joints in front prop shaft
new front pads, might as well do the rears whilst you're at it
new front discs
If you get away without rebuilding / replacing at least one caliper you're doing well.

With almost any other car I'd suggest WD40, with a Rangie I suggest RBS or HSBC.

I too have a metalic squeak noise. Mine is due I think to the cat braking up as my brakes are in good order and the front prop appears to be fine. While under the car I hit the cat a few times with my fist and could hear a bit of rattling from inside.
Obviously you must check your brakes and prop as other have suggested then also check the cat for rattles too. My noise comes and goes so I'm treating it as another little Rover feature for now. Am in no hurry to buy new cats.

an update.......

not a squeak to be heard today!!! im going to give it to my mech to put on his lift see if we can find the problem..
Lone defo not the cats as ive just replaced the whole exhaust.

cheers all

more of an update.

had the front drivers wheel off at the weekend as that is where the noise is coming from. brakes are all good lots of life in them. disks are in perfect condition as they were replaced last year by the previous owner (receipts to prove it).
my mech had greased the prop and UJs a while back
previously the squeak only occurred sub 30 mph and when the engine/brakes had warmed up a bit. now after the weekend it happens all the bloody time!!
any words of advice?
could it be the bearings and are these a grease able part?

wolf not sure its the cats as i only replaced the whole exhaust system (cat back) in july.

cheers

Do what most people on here do, turn the radio up or buy some ear plugs and ignore it. When something drops off you will definatly know what it was.:D:D:D

I have just checked and I beleive that both of my front wheel bearings need replacing......however after checking on this thread and seeing that I can apparently buy replacments for about £10, I have searched on various sites and cannot get them cheaper than £75 each.....can any suggest where I cansource these from?

Thanks

Chris

In your dreams. Classic wheel bearings maybe but not P38 bearings. Cheapest i have seen them is £65.00 plus vat. Island or Famous Four i think.

PS Belay that comment just looked on both sites and they are £75.00 upwards. Less than £70.00 on Ebay.
