i got it in me head a while back that half the things i do round here require lifting and shifting mainly engines axles and old heavy **** in and out of me trailer and from A to B

now ive sen this and thought i have the skill the tratter and can easily lay me hands on the metal and thought id give it a bash

The Series III Crane Land Rover Part 1 - YouTube

now ive come across this little beauty thats within me price range but im not so sure itll be strong enough or reliable enough just to lift things like engines gearboxes and things like cast iron woodburners ( round about the 600kg mark )
MAXTRA Heavy Duty Winch 12V 2000LB Electric ATV Trailer Recovery Remote Control | eBay

just fer the light occasional use its gonna get not for heavy laning recovery or **** like that would you guys go fer this winch for what its worth :confused:

theyre attatched to 2 flat plates in the gutter on the hardtop but i was thinkin of altering that so they go the full length of the gutter then down the back to the grab handles on the rear crossmember using a shackle clip or D shackle for removability when not in use but leave the winch built on the front hiding under the apron

can't tell from the vid but there is a trace of summat going along to the rear.

if it was indeed only fitted to the hardtop you wunt catch me lifting owt wivit.

it would create a convertable very quickly

Don't you mean a panoramic sunroof :D

Very true:)

The more falls it has the more powerfull it'll be

With less speed

I would anchor the a frame through the body though

I think the problem will be lifting a 600kg load plus the weight of the crane in front of the bumper, I think it'll tip forward, or be within a gnats bollock of! Especially as the front will be compressed down, maybe all the way.

Could always put a counterweight in the back, but you'll need another crane at the back then! Actually, how about making a rear mount one instead?

I agree, rear mounted would be better with the engine, gearbox and the rest of the Landy in counter balance.

Perhaps an "A" frame jib fabbed up from maybe 80 x 40 shs, pivotting on at the least m24 high tensile bolts from lugs on the rear cross member with "dog leg" stops resting up against the underside of the rear chassis rails to determine a reasonable height for use and substantial enough to work under load.

That you tube is quite an ancient clip . Had a mate with a similar setup , on a series , many years back he had a LR hydraulic winch on front was pretty handy forlifting engines out . He had thetop cables bolted to front of roof rack , but it was pretty heavy duty with bars going down side to the outriggers IIRC

There's a lot of variables in there for sure, the landy has lots of weight at the front by the axle and not much at the back. The compressed front suspension will bring the back up some already, A dab on the brakes whilst moving the load might finish the job (with 600kg). I use a 1.5 ton forklift and hasty braking can lift the rear with much less than half that on it.

so build a rear mounted one would be better and maybee i could hide the winch behind the rear crossmember so the cable comes out of the PTO shaft hole :D:D:D

the landy has over a tonne behind the front axle, you would have to hit the brakes pretty hard to get it to tip over with an engine on the crane (even taking into account the live load principle)

i'm a lift truck instuctor btw as well as a instructing on overhead cranes and slinging ;)

well im fully certified for overhead gantry cranes and lifting thanks to me ex employer and ive been a fork operator on and off since 1998 with various refresher courses here and there so i pretty much know what im doing with the lifting n shifting bit

as much as it pains me to agree wiff a gaylanderer ( freelaner ) hes on the right track with it :D:D

all i want to know is will that 50 nicca winch be ok fer lifting shyte like that :):)

can't put my finger on what it is yet, but that land rover in the youtube link just looks right as though it should have a crane on it. i guess thats what makes them such great "multipurpose" vehicles. but ur idea sounds great as well, sort of like the series 2 in the italian job just a little taller and longer. ;)
