Morning,
i got a copy of the Rave CD's from this site ( fantastic ) i had a look through and found out how to use the transfer gearbox, the problem i have is that i have put it into low box for the first time since i bought it 2 months ago and it wont come out. I suspect it has just stuck in and will come out when it is ready, it still drives in all six gears just obviously with a top speed of about 30 mile an hour .

The transfer stick moves between low, neutral and high but the gearbox isn't following it.

Any suggestions as to how to persuade the box to return to the neutral or high position ?

Thank for the reply Grunt, yes i have tried that, tried bouncing it up and down a few kerbs as well with no joy. I guess its time to learn about the transfer box ;-)

Jack a wheel off the ground, put on an axle stand, take out the centre seat and the flat panel under it, and check the linkages.

Bang the loose wheel to and fro as hard as you can.

Get a LONG screwdriver and poke all the baked-on crap off around the linkages.

Remember, it was working fine in HI range. It is working fine in LO range.

Ergo it is probably the linkages jammed up for want of use.

Do you get any resistance on the transfer gearstick while trying to change out of low or does it feel slack?

If it's slack, check the selector rod is moving ok and that it's attached to the transfer box selector - you'll need an assistant to move the lever while you crawl about under the car with a torch - just to be on the safe side, chock all four wheels before you start ;)

You guys are all very keen to crawl under your Landies.

Why not look at it from the top?

At worst the driver's floor panel could be used to get access.

Tell me there's a problem with this.

Apart from anything else, Mrs Gravity takes all the crap and rocks away from your eyes.

No keener than you seem to be to take bits off that don't need to be moved just for a quick visual check.

Safety glasses keep rocks and crap out of your eyes just as well as gravity - perhaps not out of you hair quite so well, but that's never worried me overly.

Im with CharlesY.

I have had a quick look from underneath while somebody else moved it and there is no movement at the transfer box but there is on the linkage from the transfer gearstick.

thanks for all the advice folk, im going in from the top, wish me luck. ( and not to many breakdowns while im at work to distract from the important stuff. ) ;-)

Don't get me wrong - definitely fix it from on top - but check you need to take something to bits before you do it or you might just be making extra work for yourself.

It was indeed the linkage, a nut had come of the back of the short arm which connects to the transfer box arm, I now can use both boxes at will, thanks for all of the advice and help offered. :D

If any one is interested this link takes you to a picture of the problem ( i think )

ar ethe threads in both parts ok?
i can't see how it would be possible for that to come adrift if it had been fitted properly in the first place!
