does any one know if i can use an a-frame in europe (france, germany, austria, serbia, hungary, czech, belgium )
thanks

I know they are totally illegal to use in the UK unless you are an emergency service, garage or roadside assist setup moving a broken down car.

Saying that folk do it all the time, and particularly foreign motorhomes.

If that were true every trailer and caravan in the country would be illegal as they all have an Aframe attached to them. Removable Aframes are perfectly legal as well as long as the vehicle been towed weighs less than 750kg (there is at least one car I can think of that does) or it is been used to tow a broken down vehicle to a place of safety. (by an individual or a breakdown organisation)

like pikey says, they are legal for towing under 750kg. if you are using it to tow a vehicle weighing over 750kg then as long as you have either remote braking or a person sitting in the vehichle to apply the brakes they are legal. i'd love to know where people get this bull**** about them being illegal unless you are a recognised emergency service from. i was once told they were only legal to use to tow a vehicle upto 4 miles. ffs.

Chris at Trevecca LR did a charity Steam Engine run from John O'Groats to Lands End last year. He towed his 90 on an A Frame behind the Steam Engine all the way!

"an A frame or dolly can only be used by a recovery vehicle operator to retrieve a broken-down vehicle and move it to a place of safety. Note:they cannot be used for any other purpose, including transportation. ...... (in towing a car with an a-frame) it must therefore conform fully to those parts of the regulations that apply to a trailer including lighting e.g. triangular reflectors must be fitted. If an a-framewere used without providing any means of braking then the car being towed would be regarded as an unbraked trailer and must therefore have a maximum GVW of 750kg. The weight is often wrongly referred to as the actual or kerb weight, but it is the towed cars GVW that has to be used. You will not find a (production) car made today with a GVW of less than 750kg. The small Smart FourTwo coupe has a GVW of 950kg. .... (for a-frame set ups using over-run coupling etc), trailer brakes must meet european directives and a car braking system does not meet these with regard to automatic reversing requirements. .... when a car is placed on a dolly you are towing two "trailers" at the same time. Other regulations (the road traffic act) therefore apply, limiting the speed to 40mph on a motorway and 30mph on all other roads."

Haynes The Trailer Manual. so it must be true.

aye ok, with your years of experience and sponge like ability to soak up knowledge, armed with yer haynes eejuts guide ter towin, then yer must be right. all hail muddy the landrover. im gonna ask you next time i need to know anything "oh great font of wisdom"

you're welcome - I'm also available for Birthdays, Weddings, Bris, - you should see me quoting from the Haynes Restoration manual, in particular the ludicrously detailed part on retrimming seats! Jeeze I amaze even mesel

totally legal!!! yes i am breakdown but i use it all the time anyway, didnt know about the weight though, used to tow my race cars with one across the country, you will find not all cars will take the one you have though, and some cars are unsure about steering with you and i have found that sometimes at low speeds on a tight corner you will end up dragging the towed car as the wheels will not turn with you and then turn the opposite way so avoid sharp corners. be sure to check your a frame is sutable for your car and go on a test run with it first to make sure its safe.

while your onnabout em anybody want one? i took off the front of me slitty, its taking up room in the shed, its a bolt to chassis jobbie with towing eye.
SHOULD DO SOMEONE A FAVOUR

Methinks your talking about a different A-frame.

A towing A-frame - you stick it on your tow bar and it tows another car/truck along behind it but because it has two fixed contact points it will "steer" the other car with it so you don't need a driver in the car being towed.
