Hey Guys,

Bought by defender last Friday but haven't really been out in her much because of a few little problems and some of the horror stories I've been reading here

I've got a few tools (spanners, sockets and screwdrivers - the usual DIY stuff) but I'm not super well equipped.

Can anyone advise me what the following issues are likely to be, the potential cost, the tools/parts I'll need to sort them and where to get them

  • Squeeling noise on power steering - Works fine though just sounds a little 'dry'
  • Heavy knocking on gear change and acceleration - not always consistent and happens slightly less if I change gear very slooowly..
  • Griding noise above 50
I suspect there are lots of fluids that need topping up and that the UJs are several worn.

On a related note: Does anybody near Oxford fancy helping out a novice with some advice and tools until I build up my own arsenal? We could make a day of it and I would provide you with a local pub dinner

Squealing noise - slipping or worn drive belt

Heavy knocking - could be A frame ball joint

Grinding noise - surprised only above 50. Could be wheel bearing or UJ or somehting as daft as disc mud guard catching. Lift each wheel, listen as you rotate, then grab wheel and see if any movement up/down or left/right

Not much that cant be sorted with sockets, spanners and a big hammer

Yeah sounds exactly like station house described. I've got same problem with a frame ball joint just not got round to it yet.

Sounds like it mostly needs a damn good service, all oils and fluids changing, including brakes and coolant, and all greases nipples greased .. ;)
