Well I don't know whether I dare post this thread but I am totally ashamed with myself for going against my own values but at least I am warm!
Today I decided to do the thermostat modification as recommended by Nodge and others which I didn't like the thought of fitting a dare I say it Renault part, there I said it!
The part ordered I decided to test it first in boiling water before cutting through the clip that held on the top hose with a Dremel cutting disc and low and behold it didn't move.
I contacted the seller and got a replacement which tested ok and the other thing that I noticed was that there was no jiggle pin in the rim of the thermostat to allow the air behind it (engine side) to bleed past so I drilled a 1/8" hole in the housing just to the side of the moving disc.
The clip was a bugger to cut through and the stat was even more awkward to get it down the top hose even after pouring boiling water on the hose at this time of year it was difficult but I eventually got it in there.
I topped up the water loss with coolant concentrate and went for a test drive and PERFECT the temperature is just below 1\2 way and I recon adding a 1/8 hole was responsible for the quick bleeding as there was no air came out of the heater hose bleed point. I also replaced my drivers window regulator as I heard a crunch during the cold spell and told my other half not to use the window and on disassembly found frayed cable about to snap so just 3 more to do in the future as I already replaced the tailgate one with the door earlier in 2019. I didn't like the thought of doing this mod but was sick of been cold and my gauge not moving so thought just eating a bit of humble pie was probably the best option so thanks Nodge and others that discussed this with me before, cheers Al.
