I've stripped the threads in one of my front calipers and it's beyond saving. I do have a spare but it's for the wrong side. Has anyone tried fitted a caliper upside down? I can't see any reason why it wouldn't work.

It's more of a is it possible question rather than actually doing it. What about swapping the ports and fitting the inlet line to the bleed nipple and vice versa???

I have helicoiled expensive Porsche callipers under instruction from the boss. Personally I wouldn't do it to my own vehicle. 'fender callipers are so cheap, just buy a new one. While you're at it do both would be my advice.

i'm not worried about helicoiling it, that wasn't the original question. i just wondered if anyone had ever thought about or indeed fitted a caliper upside down as other than making a pipe up and the bleeding issue it looks possible. as it happens i've got another caliper coming.

Not advisable to put the wrong calliper on. Accident, police, insurance all come to mind if you have swapped sides with the callipers.

That's not really any different to any modification involving brakes such as swapping axles for ones without rear drums or fitting vented discs up front. Fitting twin line calipers and just tee off a single line.......

Edge on the side of caution
You're not planning on having an accident but worst case it's incorrect fitment

I sold a guy a pair of calipers once and he fetched them back saying they didn't fit
We popped out and he showed me on the axle I had took them off
Ooops he was trying to fit the n/s to the o/s and vice versa upside down
Can't remember the model but may apply in your case

Humoured mysell today fitting new calipers on a guys Tdi
Tried them upside down on op sides
Glad to say they don't fit and fowl on the track rods
That's good news

that's the answer i was looking for rather than the 'should i or shouldn't i?"debate that was going on.
