For as long as I've had the car, it's had no condenser fitted so the system has been open/empty for an undisclosed period.
Am i foolish to think i can fit a new condenser and drier and gas the system? Or is it more likely every seal will have perished and need replacing?
It's been way down on my todo list, but the more important jobs are slowly coming to an end!
All i know at the moment is the pump isn't seized and the fans work when i connect 12v directly.

I think moister in the system is the big problem but there are plenty of home kits and professionals on the net to help you. When I had my engine changed the pump and every thing had to be swapped over. I didn't do anything for 2 years then bought a Halffauds kit and it has worked okay since (done it now saying that haven't I)

You can take it into Kwikfit, they will pressure test it, and if its ok, they fill it up, and if it ends up leaking after a few weeks, you get your ££ back
It's been suggested it will need 'cleaning', which i think means a prolonged vacuum to get any moisture out??

I dont know how to flush the system, you have to ask them about that before you fill it or test it? it might do that as it recovers the gas?

A vacuum test followed by a small charge and dye to confirm and then fill and go if all is good. Should never just be filled in ignorance. Costs you money done like that..

I'm not an AC engineer, but sure.... roll the dice. My a/c was knackered when I got mine - new condenser and second hand receiver drier, DIY fit, and was fine.... My condenser came from coolparts uk on ebay - no probs 2.5 years later

Since then the compressor started to leak at the pulley seal and I just replaced the compressor and this time put on a nice new receiver drier. If I were you I'd pour a bit of PAG oil into the compressor and rotate the clutch by hand a few times. The shop will extract the oil again anyway, but it can do no harm to have added some oil first. You'll also want some to mositen the green o rings. The sizes are a right pain - my metric Toolzone kit didn't really cover them, you may have better luck with a non metric one.
Also be aware that it's cold this time of year, and your ac may not kick in if the evaporator is below temp (and assuming your sensor is working...). There are obviously loads of other potential points of failure - hopefully all the rest of the components are working...I'm sure you'll be lucky

I've no desire to get it up and running this minute, when i see a condenser at a good price I'll buy one, you've given me confidence guys thanks
