A/C does not work

Hi all,

Just got my new (to me anyway) Freelander 2001 TD4.

The only issue I have found is that the A/C does not work. The light on the dash switch illuminates but there is no noticable change in engine revs when I expect the compresser to engage (no solernoid noise either) and the pipe work (under the bonnet) and air (through the vents) remain warm.

I have checked the fuses and they appear OK, one question, how do you test the large yellow fuse? It appears visually to be intact.

During the weekend I will check the utility belt tension.

Anyone have any tips on A/C issues?

Thanks,

Grayarea.

has it got any gas in it? would be the first question. without any pressure in the system the a/c clutch will not 'click' and yer pipes etc will be warm. i would sugest you take it in for a recharge first off.

To check the fuse take it out and put a continuity test across it, but the last thread by Slob seems ta be the way forward after bout 3 years a/c will need a top up bout £150 depends wear ya go really if ya wanna save some dosh [and who doesn't] theres a thread on here bout using the halfords top up and how ta d i y it. . .:)

over here is sunny, hot, stinky hot france they tend to recharge them every year and all for the princely sum of 68euros, about 45quid,, but as am having to rebuild me a/c compressure it can wait till i'm sure i ain't got no leaks no more.

Note that the A/C will not work if the fan is not on position 1 or higher, it doesn't work with the fan OFF.

Well said Willo. I noticed that the other day but if the fan is off the AC light doesn't switch on.
Get it checked for gas. As that slob guy says, it needs pressure to work;)

And also it helps to use it every now and then in winter as it helps to re gen the system, and if used in misty or frosty mornings with heat helps ta de mist yer motor. . .:)

i hadn't thought of that! but yer right. the a/c will not work unless it is switched on

mine is the same all the lights on etc , but no load on the motor when i switch it on so i am thinking pump etc , ill be f-cked if im going to gas it up at ££££ if it aint that help !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

quite right go for a new pump at even more £££££££££ then get it gassed. give the shrader valve a little press and see what comes out. not too much or the tree huggers will have yer balls

You could always buy a Freelander with AC that works really well. Hang on, my AC works really well and the bonus is I'm selling it ;)

I've a pump and a rad if you need one...regards cartman690...hope you dont though mine had a faulty relay causing the same problems I don't understand aircon though all done wiv hocus pokus Ithink...

pump, relay, evaporator, condensor, dryer, it don't really matter what it is, if you got no gas it don't work. so unless you ensure you have enough pressure in the system your wasting your time. cause it will never work with no gas. it needs gas to work . it doesn't work without the pressure of the gas. the pressure switch on the pump can only switch on the clutch if there is pressure in the system. the clutch pressure switch needs gas in the system to be able to energise the electro-clutch to drive the pump.
by all means swap out yer relay with a known good one but unless you have pressurised gas in the system it won't work.

youve Been given free good advice, if ya dont wanna do the logic then fine , ya can gas it up yes and have a nother fault, but your not gonna find out if ya dont take step one, so stop yer cry- ing. . .

ere ming i bet this dude would go buy a new fuel pump before checking if he has any fuel in the tank because its cost ££££ to fill up

not quite but its the only place to start unless you can see something obvious, which you can't otherwise you wouldn't be here asking. once you know it has gas at the correct pressure, if it still don't work then you can start checkin other stuff.

with td4's the harness can chafe on the air con pulley, to see this properly you would need to remove the belly panel.

allthough it would more than likely pop the fuse i would check this 1st as its something you could do yourself.

Hi all,

Got the interdynamics 562ml refill canister and put it up from maybe 10psi to 45psi (on the large boar pipe as the kit instructed) and the clutch is still not engaging the compressor.

Does it take time for the gas charge to go around to the pressure sensor?

Looks like I will have to check the sensor next!

Later,

Jed.
