So I’ve been enjoying my 03 Defender 90 TD5 over the winter, inevitably with the first decent weather the a/c (which has been blowing chilly cold all winter when I ran it to prevent seals drying up etc.) decided to give up the ghost and produced only luke warm air. As she was in our local garage (who have good knowledge of Defenders) to have the fuel regulator leak done I asked them to have a look at the a/c. The verdict is the a/c condenser (radiator) is rusty and leaking. With replacement part at circa £400 the garage didn’t touch it and I agreed to have a look at options. Any views as to whether it’s a case of stump up for the £400 part or are there other options? I’m loath to just leave it for long as I specifically bought one with a/c for the small benefit it brings in summer particularly when you have wet dogs or people in her!

Thats one expensive condenser!
Just searched and it seems you can apparently buy a used td5 engine cheaper than you can a new a/c condenser!
There must be something else that will fit?

With a/c you don’t have to have to have it turned to cold, any temperature setting it will still be ok.
The a/c specialist that are about will replace the condenser with one that matches your systems capacity, after the recovery of the refrigerant and then refilling after the replacement of the condenser.
Giving the specialist a free access to the condenser, although not compulsory, but help help with a lower final bill
A OEM condenser for my disco is £122 if I ever needed it. Genuine is around £1160 from Rimmer bros.

Thanks all, the £400 was a quick google for the part, I think it was a Britpart part. If anyone knows where it’s available for £100 as mentioned that would be a big help. I’ll do a more extensive search. I’m happy the garage isn’t trying to have one over on me as his recommendation was to leave it until I could find a part of a sensible cost.

I looked for a while and the only one was OEM. Disco ones do not fit. I also tried a £120 one which said it was for a Defender also did not fit. Second hand ones usually arnt worth it as they are so brittle they fall to bits
I bought a new condenser for £390 fitted myself, which was super easy. Just needs new seals, halfords do an aircon o ring set. Buy two sets and youll have the seals you need.
Sadly 6 months later no gas in the system, leaking elsewhere i believe.
