I was driving down the motorway earlier today, when all of a sudden the steering wheel started vibrating, then there was a loud "BANG" and I lost all steering and braking!

I thought the axle had snapped off or something. So I kept the steering wheel as straight as I could, and let off the brake pedal to let the car roll to a stop.

I eased into a lay-by and got out to find my N/S front tyre had ripped clean off the alloy and the RR was driving on the actual alloy!

Luckily, apart from some light scuffing, it was fine, so I put it in the boot and fitted the 5th alloy (which luckily has a brand new tyre fitted to it!) and drove the final 50 miles home.

But wow, scary stuff!

Eeeeek! Glad ur ok!!!

Thankfully u were in a Range; last similar problem I had was on M5, outside lane at 69.2mph (honest me lud!) and back tyre went POP!!!!

Only real issue..........didn't have 3 other wheels.... I was on Pan European

you were lucky there mate, could have turned out very nasty
I know! I'm not just saying that, I really do know! My 1990 Discovery 200 rolled over after skidding on an icy road a few weeks ago.

If that'd happened on the packed motorway it could have killed somebody! Maybe me!

I was in a punto when we went over a brick in the middle of the night. The car went onto two wheels and then the tyre burst and the wheel buckled. That was only at 20mph so I can't imagine what it was like at 70.

You must have been seriously motoring for that to happen.

Cantankerous old sod

You maybe right. But i had a blow out rear wheel at 65mph outside lane of M6 in a Defender with about a ton of air tuggers on board and it did not strip the tyre to the rim diving across to the hard shoulder. It was rather interesting at the time though.:D:D:D

peice of metal causing imediate deflation of front tyre at 90mph-not good.
50 mph. Behind builders wagon on bike **** falls off and avoided it and got 6 inch nail through rear tyre-not fun
