Hi guys,

Although I have done a search. I still can't find an answer so having to post.... sorry for the stupid questions that follows but I'm just about to do my first ever service and just need a nudge in the right direction:

I've got myself a filter kit and checked RAVE CD regarding service items which posed a few questions in itself;

1) Fuel filter change. Was fine until I read that I needed to bleed the system by slackening injector pipe or something with a special tool. Do I realy need to do this or is it just a screw off and screw on job?

2) I have a VA number 97' vehicle but have a 98' type Oil filter cap with 25NM nut .... strange as pre 98 have the 33NM nut according to RAVE. Any1 else had this? I was sent the filter with plastic ends and 1 large o ring plus 2 small ones and a washer? My plan is to flush the engine before renewing filter and oil (semi synthetic ok?) then add oil treatment to maintain.

3) Pollen filters.. these are done. Wasn't any in the bloody car (found out due to a void behind the covers) but Air con is still not blowing cold (no book on HAVAC) - Re gas?

4) Air filter... this fits flush with the top line of the bottom box yeh? as mine is now but pushes the filter out of shape a bit... normal?

5) Glow plugs... Britpart? have heard bad things.... may hold off on these. Thoughts?

6) My service plan from now on is to change the above (1-4) every 3K miles to keep everything clean and running well but what about Glow plugs. how often do these need doing?

7) Auto box oil and filter change... hard job ? best oil? do you flush as with engine oil first?

8) Axel and transfer box - again... whats the best oils to use?

9) Do I renew the steering and brake fluids (no idea when anything was done)? and how do I get the old oils out of these systems?

10) Coolant. Do I add Ironite for protection or leave well alone? (no over heating problems currently.. if anything. Runs a little cold)

11) Am planning inter cooler flush... whats the best stuff to clean. Inter cooler flush? Paraffin? Derv?

12) I was told by previous owner that she had been remapped but how do I check? (or is it a 0 to 60 time post? to find out)

Once the above is all done Ill be onto the EAS system with Rebuild Piston seal, Valve block O rings and Air bag replacements along with Height sensor changes.

Never know - within 6 months may even uprate Inter cooler, fit performance Air Filter then get remap done again to compensate for changes or if not already get mapped (dream on I hear you say).

If you need to ask these questions get someone beside you who knows what they are about to guide you. It really does worry me when people start talking up rated intercoolers and performance air filters. And have to ask how to change a fuel filter.

about the glow plugs ive heard alot of the britpart being next to useless, try and get genuine if you can. also i wouldnt think they would need changing every 3k i havent changed mine for 15k(changed them when i first got the car as i didnt know when they were last changed), def do the oil and air filter. the gearbox fluid change is an easy job, does yours have the dipstick for the gearbox or is it the later model as i think it will need the filter for the later models and is slightly different when filling back up.(Mines the older type just empty out the box through the sump plug then refill through the dipstick).

when i first went to change the pollen filter on mine it was the same as yours, no bloody filters in there!!!

ive tried on mine to start a fresh when i got it so if i didnt know when things were changed/renewed then i did them and i know exactly when everything is due.

ngk from your local motor factors-genuine:eek:

Thanks for the constructive replies...

Ill get hold of some Genuine Glow plugs. Still stuck on the Fuel filter though as I'm not confident enough to go messing with fuel lines and using specialist tools if the system really needs to be bled after fitting.

Like you Tommo; I don't know when things have been done and as the car is solid underneath and up to now (cross fingers) runs well - want to start fresh and keep her in that position.

My plan is First a full service (All oils), then belts, then EAS system overhaul, then brakes (discs, pads, shoes and hoses) then undercoat the underbelly (simply hammerite), then exhaust system if needed. I can then look at silly things like the 22inc chrome wheels and underbelly strobe lights (lol... only kidding - she's running 16s on MT tyres and will stay like that). She was not bought to be a Chelsea taxi nor will she be - that doesn't stop her being well maintained, and clean though does it.

I would still like to confirm if she has been remapped though but no idea how.... but that can wait until I finish the service.

as irish says fill the new filter with diesel then fit, did mine at the start of the year this way and didnt have any problems, then i saw on here all the problems people had with the filter and counted my lucky stars!!!!

Firstly I`d take on board Wammer`s comments, but not go as far: if you`ve gotta ask how to do it DON`T bleed brakes or any safety related stuff without some-one there to assist. If you get assistance make sure they read RAVE as the bleed of a P38 is not conventional.
Filter change: as Irish says prime filter with clean diesel and then just crank engine until she catches.(but not enough to cook starter!)
Glow plugs: change them when they changing! When tired you`ll need 2 pre-heats to start engine, instead of one.
Oils: R.T.M. Not much use in using anything apart from what makers recommend, unless you`re planning trans-sahara, or trans-siberia runs.
If unsure about which oil filter talk to local factors and take away both types, and then return unsuitable one. Saves a trip on yer bike once the oils dropped out and you`ve guessed the wrong one!
Good Luck !

Ok... so I guess the response is that I DO need to bleed the system as per RAVE is I want to do things the correct way but may be 'lucky' and get away without doing it if I fill the filter with Derv before fitting.

I might just take to garage and ask them to do it for me and keep my eyes fixed on everything they are doing to learn..... unless anyone is in north wales that is - and fancy a pint or two to show me the ropes.

I think its probably one of those situations that in all honesty I'd be perfectly fine doing on my own but just get a bit scared following all the horror stories you hear.

just clench yer buttocks and get on with it man.:p

Re fuel filter; maybe I`ve been lucky the past dozen or more times, but no probs yet. I wouldn`t want to crack off feed pipes un-necessarily. Could cause more probs, surely. Better cross my fingers next time! Any-one else bleed system or just prime filter?

Priming filter is all you should need to do. Good practice to do this on any vehicle. Rotary pumps will usually bleed themselves. Most you have to do to make sure is run engine and crack one injector open, that will expel any small amount of air in system.

Right... I'll give it a go. I had planned to do it this weekend nut the EAS has other ideas - So I'm currently having to fix that first I think.

Thank you for all the input.

Glow plugs ought to last at least 60K miles unless you do a lot of short runs. Mine are original at 100K and are working fine. My last vehicle had 150K on the clock with the original glowplugs.

The reason I was thinking about the Glow Plugs was two point. 1) I don't know when they where last done and 2) due to having a hot fix fitted - she uses the glow plugs to start even when warm so I use them much more than normal. But if they last that long - I gues I'll be ok for a while yet.
