90 towing weight

Eventually when i can afford it i would like to change the disco for a 90,one thing ive been thinking about recently is the 90's towing capacity. Im not going to be doing it much, only the odd recovery etc but does a 90 tow as well as a disco? I know it will pull just as well but arent the 90's substantially lighter than discos? Eg. I havnt seen any pics of a 90 towing a hgv, (im not saying it wont or owt) and will it pull something heavier out of thick mud etc, im just curious

I've towed in a Defender 90 and a Range Rover Classic - RRC was much better, I guess the V8 helped but the 90 get's pushed around a bit more, it still tows well though

Usual load is a mini digger and kit total weight would be around 3t

90 will legally tow 3.5t.

They weigh 1.35t as truck cab and around 1.45t as van I am guesing. But depends what engine it has

SWB vehicles will always want to snake but they turn in alot tighter where as LWB doesnt snake as much but you cant turn it as tight.

My dad has a 1984 90 County with a 200tdi in it, 235 'road' tyres and it has shifted a 300tdi discovery on a four wheel brakes trailer no problem would do 45-50 but then the trailer (was given too us and it's not very good) would start snaking, I'd say the trailer weighed about 300-350kg alone then the disco 2 tonne +
Defender 90's apparently weigh about 1.7 tonne, but it obviously depends what kit you have on them too, I was suprised how heavy 265/75 Cooper Discoverer STT's were

Thanks for the info guys, theres not a lot in it between a 90 and a disco then really if the 90 is 1.7t. It would probably pull a lorry then if needed.

Pot? Kettle? Lol I've read a fair few of your threads were you start the sentence with 'can't be arsed doing a search so can someone tell me...'

and it was a spur of the moment question as I was on my lunch break and a 90 went past which prompted me, I would have forgotten all about it if I waited till I was home

You've got the legal max for the braked towed vehicle, and the maximum train weight to consider.

Exceed one or both and if you find yourself on a weighbridge it's an interupted journey

Trailer stability can be improved a lot with a friction head, Alco do them for caravans and if you should forget to tighten it up you notice it very quickly, even with something as long and heavy as a Rover 75

The MAM of the 90 is 2400kg. The max towing capacity is 3500kg, and the max GTW is 5900kg. However, if you have only got class B on your driving licence, the max you can tow is a trailer with a MAM of 1100kg

Good point, I passed my test back in the early 80s and keep forgetting that the Govt are taking away what used to be standard license sections.

That GTW does sort of eliminate towing a lorry mind

If the lorry is broken down and is being towed with all wheels on the ground using a rope or bar, the GTW or max towing capacity is irrelevant, as it is not classed as a trailer.

It's not the power that's the issue, it's wheelbase. I've towed a lot of different things with my 90. Never had a problem with a trailer but I had a golf on an A frame and it was trying to push me straight on instead of following me round corners. Then again it was totally unbraked. Personally, I'd get a 110 for towing every day but I've had fourtraks and autograss cars on my 90 no problem.
