how does the canvas fit behind the truck cab and stop water comeing in?
90 rear canvas question.

so would it be an idea to fit some type of carpet strip to hold the front down behind the cab?

Not when the correct parts are available and just waiting for you to buy & fit them.
You want the drain channel (MUC7923) and I guess the retraining strip (MTC4054). Over 20-years since I last owned a truck-cab but I seem to recall it all fits together neatly
