its the alignment adjustments of the steering over the years thats
caused that .
youre steering wheel is not central to the actual steering centre .
the front drag link can be lengthened or shortened to alter position of
steering wheel so the cancelling stop is in the middle , but i guess
someone has altered the steering position and steering wheel position
over the years which will make none of it line up .
you may be able to rotate the cancelling stop and set it in position so
that it works ok , or you might have to adjust the length of the front
drag link to get the box/column etc in line with steering in its
straight ahead position , then will have to remove steering wheel and
put it back on facing correct way .
you will probably find that someones replaced balljoints etc and they
havent set the drop arm/draglink/steeringbox/column all to line up
correctly centrally , thus the steering wheel would have been pointing
to left or right but they would have removed steering wheel and just
rotated that in order to line things up, but of course the indicator
canceller would still have been offset .
i cant remember if i could take the canceller off and turn it on my 90
defender or if i had to change the front draglink length in order to
line up the indicator canceller , whichever way i expect the majority
of landrovers all do same as yours[and mine] and dont allways cancel
indicators or they dont allow indicators to stay on as you turn
steering a little .
the most common problem is that when replacing balljoints , they arent
all done at same time, so when someone adjusts the tracking to suit
they only adjust the rear drag link to get wheels aligned and no more ,
hence if steering wheel moves out of central position they just remove
it and install it back so it looks in line ..
when replacing drop arm or drag link balljoints people usually just
remove steering wheel and move it round to align it again and this is
where youre problem lies .
in order to correct the situation it may end up that the balljoints
threads cannot be turned without removing draglink and heating it up on
ends etc, thus an easier solution is usually opted for , ie steering
wheel removal .
even if balljoint threads are copper slipped when assembled, the fine
threads allways end up becoming almost seized over a short period of
time and it requires a fair amount of work to renew balljoints and get
old ones out , this has been same problem for years with landrovers,
all the way back to series 1 .
