just bought a 90 3.9v8 with a lt77s gearbox and a spped related Drrrrrrrrr has started coming from the gearbox in every gear but 4th , i am told it is the layshaft and best replace the gearbox ?
anyone confirm this is the case
also if im replacing the gearbox should i be replacing it with the same type or is there an alternative , i will be using the truck for on and offroad use
at the same time i may consider changing the transfer box whats the best ratio for the type of use i meantion above
also should i buy used or reconditioned parts ?
thanks
chris

I agree that it is the layshaft bearings.

The D90 transfer box high ratio is 1.4:1 and is probably the compromise ratio unless you do silly big in the tyres. The D110 high ratio is 1.6:1. The low ratios are all the same in the LT230 transfer box.

thanks for confirming thinks
anyone suggest best place for a recon box , i have been told ashcrofts are the best ?

aye i heard that they are good, im skint o i was just lookin for the cheapest recon i could get, that said the breakers wanted £546.25 for a 2nd hand one n i got quoted £525 from gearbox mts , but as i live in the north of scotland( prob be on news the night cause o floodin) they wanted £120 delivery, managed to get a recon one from guy who stays well into the sticks for just under £600, n that includes gettin it up this end o the country.
gutted ma landy is broken as would o been good drivin about up here the day, water 10foot in bits :) ...... glad i stay up a hill :d

aye its just as bad as it was 12 year ago, the local 4x4 response was called out at quarter to 2 this morning and are back on standby, i think it will be a long night, i would be out ana, but would be no use wi no gearbox

R380 at ashcrofts £445 exchange plus carriage and deposit on your old box until returned
had a quote for fitting of £350 in case i cant fit a couple of days labour in and all the hassle when it goes wrong
i suppose the cost of a new clutch as well at £85 plus new fluids say £30
not goin to be cheap even if i do it myself , but want the truck back on the road asap !!!!!

hi
I am sure this is not the case and i am totally wrong, but i done a gear box on an escort(whoa i know not a landy) and i forgot to put any oil in it and it made a horrid speed related noise, just how you describe. I know i may be wrong but always good to look at the most simple stuff, specially if you only just bought it. Never know somoene could have 4gotten(doh) or it may be low.
In any case if it been like that in a while, its possibly fekked. But least if its oil least u got a few miles before you have to change it.
:S

i had hoped thats what was wrong wi mine, but after checkin the oil, i then hoped it was the thrust bearin, was just thinkin on savin pennies, but no. looks like its goin to be a few quiet nights in for me to pay for the gearbox.
