I'm just trying to understand how the fuel tank cradle is fixed to the fuel tank, if indeed it is? I've got my old fuel tank off with cradle attached...is it attached by mud & corrosion or is it bonded in place or what?

I've been sent a Britpart replacement cradle (ESR2204) but having googled to look for an answer, I've read someone found this part didn't fit by some 2" short on the length!

Perhaps I should just go for a replacement tank with cradle?

Help & thoughts gratefully accepted!

This for a tdi with the tank under the seat?

If so it comes with a guard attached to the tank, there is no cradle to speak of, it kind of bolts in with the front and back of the tank.

Oh bugger! Looks like I got that wrong then!

In answer to your question, yes, the tank is under the seat and looking at it again I can see it's an integral part. There looks to be some sort of gasket material or something sandwiching between tank and cradle but it's so full of crud it's a job to make out.

So the cradle I've just received needs to go back and I'm sorely tempted to go for a replacement tank as I'm concerned how much corrosion exists between cradle and tank on my old one.

Is it a no-brainer?

If it is out I would replace it to be honest. They don't last that long. As some advice I wouldn't go for a britpart one, mine is less than a year old and is already pretty rusty.

OK, so I bought a new fuel tank (with integral cradle). I would like to seal the gap between tank & cradle to stop all the crud getting in there. No harm in doing that is there?

It's just there for a bit of extra protection. I put a new one on my Ninety about 6 months ago. Pig of a job. Gave it the good news with a few coats of stonechip to help protect it.

Good idea. I should do that :p I guess a lot of the rot comes from crap getting stuck in between the two layers
