Tell me.... When I remove the negative lead from the battery when the engine is running it cuts out!!!! Why? I am assuming it is becaues of the fuel shut off on the injector pump, but surely the alternator should supply the current once running. Do I have a problem or is this how it is!? I can not be sure it is the fuel shut off by the way... just a guess.

Put a mates battery in the other day to get it started. When tried to swap when running it stalled!!! Could not swap it!! Thoughts?

my n/a would run with the battery disconnected

ah my n/a will too;) ah think only earlier n/a's with the 45amp lucas alternator will run (correct me if am rong) i think as nothing else is powered off the alternator , the 300 tdi dunt run wi out battery tho, cant swap when started with other battery

I think the older lucas alternators could generate their own excitor voltage (required to generate) but i rekon the newer ones need a battery in circuit, cos they has fancier electroncery in them.

Could be talking bollocks though.

I do know its not good for an alternator to run it with no battery in circuit though.

I was always told it would knacker the alternator if you ran it without a battery connected.
