My 1988 90 has the following braking problem, very occasionally whilst driving along it will start pulling to the nearside without any braking applied, this becomes progressively worse with hot smell, but then the pulling stops and I find I have lost all brake pressure. I check brake fluid level-all ok, scratch head and then I find brake pressure is back to normal and it drives completely normal again!.. untill the next time which might be days or weeks.

The intermittent nature of the prob makes it very difficult to sort.

Any thoughts on what might be the problem would be much appreciated.

Thinking out loud here: you have brake bind on one of the wheels (or more maybe) and it's boiling the fluid. The boiling might not be helped if the fluid is getting on a bit and has water contamination (can't be helped really the fluid is hygroscopic) which will have reduced your boiling point.

I would jack up the front NS wheel when cold and see if there is any bind, if there is take out the pads, clean them up, push the pistons home refit (with copper grease on back of pad) and try that.

i dont suppose someone has run the brake lines near to the exhast or manifodld have they

has it always done this ?

check the piston pots, they mite be rusty and jamming on. has the brake fluid been changed? there could be crap in pipes.:)

Thanks for the info, I will havwa look at it this week and let you know what I find.

Hi Sean, no I have the vehicle for 12 years but only in the last few months has the problem stared.
