`87 upgrade to what?

A friend has an `87 2.5 turbo which is now underpowered and tired. He wants to put in either a 200tdi or 300tdi.
Which is the better engine, if any, and is a Disco 300tdi superior or inferior in any way?
In terms of work needed to accept a newer engine, apart from engine mounts which he is aware of, what else is involved in such a project, i.e. which gearbox to fit, propshaft issues, etc.? :confused:
 
200 or early 300 series is simpler as no electronics to contend with.

300tdi needs new engine mount but the turbo is higher so no need to modify the exhaust. check ere for a concise guide Landrover 110 NA to 300tdi engine page I'm sure yu can google 200tdi disco engine into a defender, and find lots of guides. Once read you can then decide which is most suitable. :rolleyes:
 
Sorry wiltshire landyman and all other senior members, I know newbies ask dumb questions that you have all seen a dozen(hundred!) times, but when that little `search` box comes up you just dont know what the hell to type in :eek:
Its such a small box for so many long winded questions!! ;)
A short nudge in the right direction will suffice....................... please.
I think he`s mostly considering a Disco 300tdi, unless those with the knowledge on here suggest otherwise. Its modifications he needs help with.

Yeh, cheers redhand, I did read it. Excellent article and just what we need, but too tech for me so will let my mate read it and get a copy. Thanks for that. :)
