Will 75w110 quieten down my whiney diff?

I have a 1,000 mile journey coming up and would like a nice simple solution to quieten down my slightly whiney front diff!

It's whined from day 1 so I'm used to it, but it does get tiresome after 15 hours or so!

Anything wrong with bunging some (decent) 75w110 in there for the trip? Will this make any difference?

For info I change the diff/xfer oils every 6 months regardless of mileage and have used Fuchs Titan Sintopoid 75w90 since I bought the car.

It’s pointless to change the diff oil every six months.
But you could try the heavier grade oil, it won’t do it any harm.
When l drained the oil in my 110 TD5 front diff it consisted mostly of swivel grease. Surely not the ideal lubricant, but it had been that way for years.

Try earplugs, or bigger speakers.

Mine to, but I suppose it means the swivels are getting lubed with oil....
 
Ear plugs the soft ones are brilliant, take the edge off but still allow you to hear with no issues
 
Didn’t consider the over heating risk with heavier grade oil.
You could try an axle rebuild....that might cure the noise.

Yeah, I started changing it because it gets pretty heavy use driving a full load of passengers up and down a mountain every day over winter, and I also found that the front diff oil mainly consisted of swivel grease! :confused:

Regular oil changes has quietened it down alot, but it's still annoying! I have some noise cancelling headphones that I wore on the way out but I have a passenger this time to take home!

Ok, so I think I'll stick with the 75w90... Cheers all :)
