Hi All,

Apologies in advance for my tyre technology ignorance!

Need to replace all of the tyres on my old SIII. Plenty of tread but side walls are cracked and perished (been like that since I've owned her but time to get them sorted). I think the rims are wolf rims (picture attached).

I'm not after anything fancy, I'll even be happy with remoulds as long as on-road performance is good and they're not completely useless in the snow/bad weather.

Tyres are currently a mix of avon and firestone, and are marked 7.50 x 16 (can't make out much more than that). I know they have inner tubes also.

These tyres seem to be hard to come by and VERY expensive when you do find them.

My question is, is there a modern alternative that will fit on these rims, or am I better off replacing the rims as well?

TIA,

Nick

1st they most definately are not "WOLF" Rims Wolf is the code for the armies latest version of their landrovers. and your series is about 40years older than the oldest wolf landy.

your rims are Weller 8 spokes.

Ah, useful info, thanks. That's what you get for relying on a search hit in eBay! So, quetion still stands, what are the best options for new rubber to stick on my Weller 8 spokes? :)

Just put a set of 235/85/16's on mine (nearest size match to 7.5/16's). If you're used to the tall tyres, you'll miss them if you go to a smaller size. ;)

E bay michelin XZL 7.50 really goos tyres, lassa also do a direct copy

Been a while and I'm still looking for a decent but CHEAP set of 235/85/16's which are mostly suited for the road. Had a search setup on flea-bay but these seem to go for plenty bucks part worn!

I only do a few (3-5k) miles a year and mostly all on-road. I've found someone punting some remoulds (which I'm OK with), labelled as "235/85R16 MARIX PANTHER NEW REMOULD ALL TERRAIN TYRES 2358516 NOT INSA".

Any opinions, or better options?

As always, all opinions and help gratefully received!

I've been running 750x16's for years, and they are a standard commercial tyre, available from the likes of ATS ... and not too expensive.

If you get the decent ones, they can have their treads re-cut a couple of times at a fraction of the cost of new!

Managed to find a good set of 5 General Grabber tyres (thanks CIW2032) and got these fitted at the weekend. They went on a treat and make a huge difference on the road. One thing that didn't occurr to me until I was ringing around trying to find somewhere to fit them though, I needed an oversized (15.7mm in my case) valves for the rims (the old boots had tubes in them). but otherwise they went on a treat. The guy had some trouble balancing the wheels, had to use a lot of weights to get them as good as he could. He cursed my rims seemingly having had to do similar many times previously!
