Hello!

I have seen a set of 7.50 r16 tyres on 5.5j rims, tubeless. I currently have a 1991 defender 90 with drum brakes on the rear, are there any issues with fitting these? I am a bit of a novice so any help greatly appreciated.

ok thank you, i was at a landrover show today and saw 5 good tyres on 6.5j newish steel wheels but didn't have enough cash on me, they were only £200 and I really need new tyres and wheels!

I have seen these which I was dubious about. But now I know to stay clear. If you know of anyonewilling to sell newish original steels and tyres for cheap I would be willing to buy! lol :)

Land Rover Defender Wheel and Tyre on eBay (end time 16-Sep-10 05:59:44 BST)

I can't remember the make now as I have been trying to blank them from my mind! But they were on original steels which were just dirty but had absolutely no rust and 1 of the tyres was brand new, they were 7.50 r16 and yes at Stoneleigh, I went back to get the guys number (think he was a breaker) just to see someone loading them onto their 110 roof rack, did you buy them? lol

not me i left sunday morning........ if you want to keep it looking original go to a breakers they normally go for £10 each for the lwb rims or if you don't mind it looking non original go for a disco steel as they are 7x16 i believe

pretty sure they will but dunt quote me on that if all else fails stick a disco rear axle on it ;)

i'm gonna be running lwb rims with insa turbo traction tracks next year cause in 235/85r16 they are nearly the same width as 750s

I like the look of the insa turbo traction track as I currently have the old BFG version (same tread) but I am a bit worried about retreads/remoulds, how much of a difference is there between remoulds etc and normal tyres?

remoulds aren't the same as the ones you used to get that would spit the tread at the drop of the hat, the insa ones are prob the best ones going they check (and x ray) all the carcasses before they use them, while you were at stoneleigh did you go on the 4site tyre stand? on saturday i had a chat with one of the guys there who had been to insa's manufacturing site and he said they were top notch and 4site don't sell to the public so he has no reason to big up any of the tyres (especially as they were the cheapest ones on the stand lol)
i did have a look at the simex extreme trekker 2 on devons stand they are not a bad price considering lol £1k for 4 36x10.5x16

I did go to the 4site stall but they priced me over another place when I was asking about avon rangemaster and general sag!

There are far too many choices of tyre!

the rangemaster is a good road tyre i have them fitted at the moment but its not very good in mud, not used the SAG, my mud tyres are 750 firestone SAT copies (me spare is a genuine SAT) i have a pair of 750 avon traction mileage as emergency spares

I think I'll just have to give up with the size I currently have and go back to a more common smaller size for a slightly lower price

G-man has his Series III head on :p

Defenders don't have SWB or LWB rims, the standard steel rim (not the 'Wolf' rim) is 5.5" x 16" and is fitted to both 90 and 110.

The standard 5.5" x 16" steel rim is fitted (from the factory) with 7.50x16 tyres on 110's and 205/80x16 tyres on 90's.

My 110 (in my signature pic) has the standard 5.5" steel rims, fitted with 7.50x16 Avon Rangemasters - fitted from new.

Lots of people say that 235/85x16 tyres are the same size as 7.50x16 - they're not, they're wider.

Tyre manufacturers usually recommend a rim size of between 6.0" and 7.0" for this size of tyre.

The 'Wolf' rim at 6.5" wide is perfect for this size.

These would fit your 90 and there would be no issues with the drum brakes.

You would have to adjust your steering stops - to stop the tyres rubbing on the radius arms at full lock.
