605934 rear step help

I just fitted the repro folding rear step to my S3, got it on although I will have to do some mods to the towing bracket and tank mount, these are not unexpected.
However it doesn't lie horizontal when folded down and the "down" stop is too short and the little reinforcing stop on the bracket also doesn't touch the chassis.
Is this simple poor fitting repro parts again?
I also have a little bit of rubber tube that is not mentioned anywhere in the instructions, I assume this goes on the pivot rod somehow?
Anybody else fitted one?

I seem to have sorted out all the issues apart from the step going to far down due the stop being short. I hate repro parts that don't fit well. The Paddocks copy is OK but isn't as good as the original, nor as well made. It looks like I'll need to weld on an extension to the rear stop ( there should be two stops so another weaker point) to stop the step at the horizontal rather than keeping going down.

I have the plate snd hinge off an original that I fancied butchering onto the back somehow but I’ve never got round to it. I was going to drill a bar for the tow ball bolts like a modern one.
Another job for another day.

I have the original tow bar for the series with the angle iron reinforcing, I had to make this reinforcing because the old one was in some state. I have taken the new one off and fitted the step and will eventually cut off the corner and reweld the part on to accommodate the step plate.
The new step is not as well built as the Genuine one but it was all I could get, the only real remaining issue is the step doesn't sit level cause the stop on the back of the step is too short, but I'll sort this by welding on a small plate of the right thickness.
