OK, having reached 60,000 miles in ou2 2002 TD4 I thought I would post all the problems we have had with it - knowing how "unreliable" and "rubbish" Freelanders are.

- Two sets of tyres (probably wouldn't recommend Goodyear Wranglers as other Freelander owners report better wear from other brands)
- One blown headlamp
- Driver's mat replaced after wearing out in first year (replacement has lasted 55,000 miles)
- Air conditioning button doesn't light up

[sarcastic]What a catalouge of mechanical failures!!!!![/sarcastic]

Cheers

1999 l series 3 door, just 0ver 103,000 kms( roughly 60,000 m)
Prop bearings changed,
new rear exhaust,
centre exhaust,
starter motor repair,
clutch bracket and assembly,
engine cooling hose,
2 new rear tyres worn due to castellation,
rear brake cylinder,
Drop links and anti roll bar bushes,
Oh and i gotta go and buy my 2nd battery in 2 yrs today.
All this in less than 3 years,
All my previous vehicles would have had less things changed in 33 bloody yrs,
I am really thinkin of getting a piece of jap crap instead as i really dont feel comfortable with the reliability anymore,
So you done well mate.

:) Dun 58k in 5 yers TD4 with the following t' report
Sum tyres (cant remember how many....but they r just feckin expensive)
air con re-fil
fuel coolant rail split
tailgate window has mind of own- sum times
sum oil changes and stuff
Over all better than any Fix Or Repair Daily (FORD) I've 'ad and as gud as any other Landy I've beaten the feck out of.

Oh yeah, add aircon refil to my list.

Tatooboo - what's going on with your battery? Something not right there - you risk treating the symptom and not curing the problem.

Cheers

:(I think i burnt out some plates when i was trying to sort the starter motor( kept trying to turn her over and then realised that the repair werent right) out and typically couldnt find the receipt for the old one,
seems to be fine now and i did think about that first, as in how come i need another battery checked for earth leakeage etc and it just seems ive been unlucky.
Thanks for the concern though
Cheers

just fitted 3rd set of tyres,
1 diff mounting bush £14
1 intercooler hose £25
rear wiper arm £12
normal service items, brake pads, oil, filters etc,
still drives and handles well,

rover ron synergy unit fitted, big improvement to drivability

top tip " dont let the dealer get their hands on yer motor " D.i.y if you can

3 td4 freelanders from x reg to present 54 reg.

only 2 problems in 60thousand miles.

hose got a hole from rubbing on bolt, loads of smoke, we were towing our caravan at the time. mail meif you see us on police camera action.
2nd break down - the maf sensor went, i was stranded on a dual carraigeway.
the green flag recovery guy wasnt a mechanic ( waste of time) but i sorted it with a bit of help / advice from fellow members.

apart from the normal wear and tear its been a great car.

i would prefer a range rover with lpg but i couldnt afford the running costs

i believe a lot of the crap spoke about freeladers are down to the 1.8 petrol engine. oh and the 2 litre rover diesel with the tractor engine. its as fast as a bus - i mean a double decker

my girlfriend had a rover 218, it was a decent car quite fast.

she was quoted 500 quid to sort a head gasket problem.

cost me less than 200 inc having the head skimmed ( the cars not mine)
new gaskets, head bolts, water pump. cam belt.
it took a couple of weekends but i got it sorted.

i know its a different story if you are stuck for transport.

Recently purchased a 06 Freelander TD4 Sport, from the company I work for 14,000 km on it. Took it to the LR dealer to have it checked out (the guy I normally use was on hols). They said it needed new front discs. I could not see anything wrong with them, neither could my usual mechanic.

This is my 2rd freelander, my previous freebie only every seen the machanic for regular service (once a year), and one time a door speaker failed, which i replaced myself.

My usual mechanic is a guy with a shed with a pit at the back of his house, but knows his stuff.

The biggest problem with the Freelander in my experence are the rip off dealers.

Dealer had to put a couple of bits right when I bought it 7 months ago but since then my TD4 has needed the following:

Brake light switch (£6)
Road tax (£112)
Diesel (39 mpg average)

Will need some tyres soon. Overall, very happy and much more reliable than the X-Trail I had before it!

Cheers
