i read that if you have air you can change it?? dont know if thats right though.has anyone on here done a conversion

I think I'm right in saying that all 7 seaters have air suspension. Coil spring versions are not homolated for 7 seats.

So if you plan to put 7 seat on a coiler, check with your insurer first - don't give them any excuses to refuse a claim !!

In practical terms it's fairly easy and you can often get a full set of parts and trim on fleabay, but as has been mentioned apparently only those with air suspension were type approved for 7 seats. You are going to have to tell your insurance company if you do it, so why not ask them before you do it.

what they say but land rover supply coil springs for 7 seaters so why do they sell them if they are not type approved
a topic like this was talked about before, it seems that there were different suspention combos for different numbers of seats, i didn't agree and got a lot of grief, :flame2:

This rings a bell with the Disco3. I was under the impression that the coil springs were replaced by air bags because they took up too much space, not because there were type approval issues....

I have a 95 300tdi ES with coils and 7 seats.
no 300tdis were ever fitted with air

if i wanted to convert my 5 seater with coils to a 7 seater then the air suspension thing would not stop me but if i did not tell my insurance (but i do tell them about every change never cost me anything) then it could cause problems when/if i had a claim

I fitted extra seats to my 300tdi. I informed Adrian Flux (Insurance) and they were fine with it.

Having said that, they have been fine with all the mods I have made (bumpers, winch, snorkel, seats, big tyres) & not increase the premium.

I like Adrian Flux, they make life so much easier :).

I lost my insurance certificate. They emailed me a replacement within minutes.

The only reason air suspension was fitted to the 7 seaters was so that the back could be lowered if nessesary to help the rear passengers get in and out, Other than that springs are just as good.

The insurance company WILL be interested to know that the number of seats has increased simply as its 2 more potential accident victims that they may have to pay out for in the event of an accident.

sorry to say not true or possible Brian, you cannot "lower" a D2 with air unless you have the remote fob to do it and most people never bought one of those, the 7 seaters have the rear step to aid people getting in.

The reason they have air is so it self levels, with the extra weight that far behind the axle, standard coils would just sag to much.

If your thinking of doing this mod, check your V5, it "may" even say 7 seats to start with, in which case no one knows any different.

And if you are going to do it, I would HIGHLY advise you replace the rear springs for seven seat heavy duty ones, as your current springs will already have sagged a lot and will not cope with the potential weight

Just to follow up on UP's post, if you look in your handbook, under maximum weights, you will see that the air spring models have a higher weight carrying capacity, due to the self levelling aspect of the air suspension.
