HI
i have a defender 90 and unfortunatly its a bit poorly and requires a new engine, i thought since i have to rebuild it i might aswell rebuild hardcore and go for a gmc 5.7 litre V8 diesel engine! has this been done before? if so is there a conversion it available? or a place where parts can be sourced easily?
I am an engineer by trade anyway so if i have to make parts myself i will. what are peoples thoughts??

i converted my previous 90 to 6.2 gmc v8, engine and adaptor to bellhousing came from a company called samuri engineering down near axminster in devon, not sure if there still in business tho, the engine was ex. us military surplus from gulf war ,used in the hummer ,was a lovely drive loads of power and good economy but had probs with head gasket/wet liners rebuilt it twice but still not right so sold the vehicle on,

You're gearbox will be torn to shreds pretty quickly - in fact most of your drive train.

I think it would be quite a conversion but it's just not worth it, it would just be ridiculous.

You would really need to take the drive train from a hummer too to cope with the power, low range first give it a little throttle and it would break something!

I think there are much more clever upgrades that can be done to a landrover.

This is what he needs!

:mil80:Id love one too but if it didnt break the drive train, keeping diesel in it would break me. I get about 27 mpg now what would 6.6 liters manage 7 ?

I think it would be cool but in the long run i don't want to be going through gearboxes and halfshafts, for the moment i think i will repair my current diesel. maybe a V8 later on lol lol. thanks for all the comments!!

My friend has one already buit with a 6.7 ltr GMC diesel. He's frightened to take it out as he doesn't want another halfshalf or gearbox to break, and suprisingly not a good motor to sell on as these days people read the forums etc before buying. So, my advice would be to look for a knackered discovery - Spare Diffs, and a 300 TDI engine which will drop straight in with the R380 gearbox attached.
