Do we need big 4x4s in our town centres?
Are they really more polluting or dangerous?
Does our consumerist market justify their ownership?

That text has been put about on a flyer from ITV for research for a
new program. I've spoken to the researcher behind this today and
she's keen present a balanced view despite the "anti" sentiment in the
header which was designed to attract attention.

Most of the response so far as been from the antis, so if anyone wants
to put their best foot forward, I suggest getting in touch.

I have penned a response although I'll be surprised if this isn't yet
another one sided anti 4x4 piece.

They won't read them out for you. What they want are opinionated/excited
people to join in a shouting match on TV. Sounds like a complete nightmare.

I envisage someone being picked who won't be particualrly articulate or come
over all that well deliberately. I'd just like to say before any one
suggests me, I'm busy that day.

I sent a snotty email to BBC Three Counties news room after they posted
some tripe about 4x4s tearing up footpaths. The response was very nice
and they invited me to join in a radio debate with some old lady from
the ramblers association. I turned down the invite and suggested they
contact GLASS.

There is sure to be an anti 4x4 spokes-person with a rehearsed list of
"facts" and horror stories. When they accuse you of giving their child
asthma and running over their cat there is little you can come back with.

I wonder if there are any figures on the number of cars using
bio-diesel. There are probably many times more Land Rovers than modern
family cars or city cars.

Who told them about the cat?

They are ultimately at the mercy of the host.

I hit a cat in Sussex the other day. I was doing 60 at the time. I was in
the works Megane, though. Does that count?

Was it a 4x4 Megane? I suspect it must have been. Only 4x4s are dangerous.
2WD vehicles use no fuel[1], they reduce congestion and pedestrians just
bounce off with a laugh and a friendly wave.

[1] in fact, they only turn up to filling stations to RETURN fuel which
nasty 4x4s then steal.

TV programmes made to depict violently opposing opinions rather than a
balanced, common-sense view? That's never happened before.

Hi Andy,

Suggest posting it to uk.rec.cars.4x4 as well.

I received a phone call this morning from 'Catherine'. She did comment
that there had been a sudden surge in pro Land Rover emails. It was
inconvenient for me to talk at work, but she is ringing again this
afternoon.

Let's hope we are not strung out to dry for the entertainment of the
nation. =:-( )

I sent tham a suitably opinionated, but polite and logical, reply, and
have asked if I want to contribute.

I can vouch for the fact that the research in question is a real
person, and is interested in getting a balanced view of the story.

I'm optimistic, given the number of responses they'll have received
from here and several other forums, there will be a few intelligent,
articulate individuals who have 4x4s for a reason to get on there and
make a point or two.

Part of the cat is now also in the works Megane. The remainder ricocheted
nicely and is no longer in Sussex.
