The centre diff lock locks the front and rear props together, not the axle differentials. It gives the effect of one front wheel turning at the same speed as the opposing rear wheel (diagonally across the vehicle).

diagonally across isnt important it could equally be 2 wheels on the same side spinning or having no drive
 
Don't use the difflock on tarmac. Not for anything more than a few yards in a straight line anyway otherwise you'll do all sorts of nasty things to your transmission.

If you get off the mud onto tarmac and the difflock light won't go out when you shift back to the right, put the steering on full lock and reverse a little. Better still, slip the difflock off as you approach the grippy stuff.
