Dear all,
My 1999 4.6 has blown its' head gasket again.

2 months ago I spent £1300 having heads pressure tested and skimmed, new valve stem oil seals and it all put back together again, only for it to happen again in even more spectacular fashion (steam and oil smoke from nearside bank this time).

I have as I see it 2 options, replace the engine as I assume the block is probably the cause,

OR

Flog it as is.

It just sailed through its' MOT again and has almost a year of warranty on the LPG system, is in great condition inside and out and I have had no problems with the air suspension since replacing a rear air bag last year.

Opinions on course of action would be appreciated as I love the car, but I am
wary of more expense and misery if it goes tits up again.

Cheers,

Mark

New block will set you back close to £2-2.25K.....

Flogging it with duff engine - you'll be lucky to either a) Shift it or b) Get much more than £750 (if that) for it....

You could break it, as it will be worth more in bits than as a whole....

If you flog it, do you have either another car you can use or will you have to get another car??

What will you get nowadays that is not falling apart to badly itself for less than £2k??

I have the use of my wifes' car until I decide what to do, and it was a mechanic friend who did the work and it has run fine for about 3500 miles, the rad heated evenly and all was good for a short while.

I had hoped to get more than £750 for it as it is in such good condition.

Someone with an engine lying around could have it back to its best for not much cash. I don't have the time to waste or a bottomless pit of spare money to keep throwing at it. Really gutted as it is a great car.

Better the devil you know I say.

I'd replace the engine, you won't get as good a car for the money you'll spend getting this one fixed.

If money is an issue and you don't fancy a re-engineered top-hat one from Turner or whoever, I'd look on eBay. There are reputable sellers with a reputation to protect selling complete engines with all ancillaries for £1000. And eBay is expensive.

Now have to seriously think about replacing engine before getting rid of it as selling it with a knackered engine probably will be a nightmare.
