4.6 using alot of oil

Hi folks!
I've got a 2001 p38 and the 4.6 v8 is using nearly as much oil as fuel!

Strange thing is, there doesn't seem to be any clues as to where the oil is going. No smoke (ever!) and no significant leaks (according to land rover themselves and the driveway).

There's about 75k on the clock and it seems to be using around 1 liter every 300-400 miles ish? I razz it a bit but generally its treated very gently.

Surely this isn't normal! has any one got any ideas where all my oil is going?

what sae oil are you using 10w40? if you are try using 15w40.

would that really make that much difference?

does anyone have a similar aged enginge? how much does yours use?

it has to be going somewhere and there are only a few ways it can go!! coolant, floor and through exhaust!!

could it be a seal thats gone and its only leaking under heavy load?

It must be burning it. Perhaps you can't see smoke 'cos it's only doing it when you are giving it some welly and it is just getting blown away.

hmmm, i'll try and get someone to follow me and watch as i floor it. maybe not me dad in his honda jazz (don't worry he's got a landy aswell)! ha!

if its goin in the coolant what should i look for?

Coolant will look nasty. Mayonnaise under the oil cap. Usually mean head gaskets gone though.

the coolant and oil both look normal...

You could be burning it then. Check your spark plugs for signs of excess oil burning (number 3 on pic below)



Failing that, it could be seals or piston rings failing.

Mate of mine ended up putting new piston rings in his 4.6 because he had heavy oil consumption like yours and it failed the emissions on the MOT

check your valve stem oil seals,how do I know.....exactly same problem!

Do a complete wet and dry compression test, this should give you an indication if you need new rings/head gasket or if your problem is in the top end. Would think this is the most sensible place to start.

I had the same problem, i am now having to do a rebuild after is siezed. the head gasket had gone, around number 4 pot, blowing into the con rods, oils was burnt and caked around rods.

no sorry, i just got a new engine coz when we took the heads off it had slipped a liner.
