my 4.0 P38 has 189000 miles on the clock, and whilst its engine runs fine with no problems, I've been offered a 4.6 with 30000 on it, but heavy rear end damage, I'm wondering if I was to park them side by side and take engine and box out of the 4.6 and put it into my 4.0, would I have to swap ecu's etc etc? Would it work? Or would it be opening a gigantic can of electrical worms?

Are they both GEMS engines?
The 4.0 Gems ecu has different mapping to the 4.6 so that would have to be changed. You may need to get the "Handshake" code on the engine ecu reprogrammed, but unlikely, may also need a reteach or resynch with diagnostics. Otherwise, you should not have too much trouble. These comments are made "Off the top of my head"
If I think of anything else, I will advise.
