After the xmas from hell, family berevement, thrown my back out, EAS grief, spitting out rear brake pads, cancelled ferries back home and now a grinding alternator.
4.6 petrol V8's are not very popular in Ireland so after a five hour round trip to get one I've read up on its replacement which sounds straight forward enough but I've a stumbling block: the belt tensioner!
This is probably the stupidest request yet but can anyone describe the loosening/slackening of the tensioner before I get stuck in tomorrow?
I cannot express my gratitude enough if anyone can help, I just seriously want to put the last two weeks behind me, get back home and put all this sh!t behind me!
Many thanks in advance

If its the 4.6 p38 tensioner pulley, the whole unit is held on by one bolt through the center of the spring unit. To put mine back on fit the tension unit then I loop the belt round all Tue other pulleys then round the tensioning pulley, put a 15mm spanner on the pulley wheel bolt, pull the wheel up to the right with the belt in the other hand, lift it over the alternator pulley. I had the viscous fan off when I did it, big spanner and a good wellie gets it off if you ate lucky. I had to used g clamps the grip the pulley wheel then smack the spanner on it. Eventually went.

Good luck.

Am I right in thinking the bolt thru the actual pulley is of a sprung loaded type in as much when you spanner it clockwise it just releases the tension off the belt?
I know this should prboably be in the stupid questions section but I would just like to be forewarned before I start!

Yes my friend, the tensioner is spring loaded. Put a 15mm socket on the pulley bolt, ease it to the right to release, replace belts etc and ease back to the left to take up the tension.

Don't forget we're here to help - we were all novices at something once.........

Thank you good people

This excellent video from rswsolutions highlights exactly how it works.

I've got to do the same at the weekend when I replace my water pump.
